Connor Jones sets Ram Masters scoring record
FORT COLLINS – Connor Jones hinted that his game was rounding into form as he advanced to the round of 32 at the US Amateur at Cherry Hills just a month ago. It's safe to say it's stayed on track since. The graduate student for the Rams scorched the field at the Ram Masters Invitational taking the medalist honor by nine strokes to open the 2023-24 season.
Â
He did so in record fashion, beating the tournament record by two strokes shooting a 13-under, 197. His 54-hole total ranks tied for fourth in program history.
Â
The win marks the fourth in his career as a Ram, and fifth in his college career. The four medalists tie him for second most in CSU history with Ryan Peterson.
Â
Jones entered Thursday's final round at 11-under shooting a 64-65 during the opening 36 on Wednesday to hold a six-shot lead. As he settled into his final round that grew with an opening 32 through nine. He recorded four birdies over it, including three straight on holes 6-8.
Â
As he made the turn, Jones and his teammates were aiming to gain ground on a familiar foe for head coach Michael Wilson in the Long Beach State 49ers. Wilson's former team had taken the lead on the Rams on the team scoreboard after the two were tied following Wenday's action.
Â
Colorado State made a run at the 49ers on the back nine combining to go 4-under on holes 12 and 13 including five birdies. Christoph Bleier led the charge for CSU posting three straight birdies on 12-14 and capped it off with an eagle on 15, but it wasn't enough.
Â
Still down as the holes remaining dwindled, CSU had to take their shots, but just missed as LBSU snapped CSU's eight-year win streak of the tournament.
Â
The Rams finished with three golfers in the top 10 in Jones, Bleier (T4, -3) and freshman Jake Rodgers (T7, E).
Â
There is little time for rest for the Rams as they head down I25 this weekend to compete in the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational September 10-12 at the Eisenhower Golf Course. CSU won the event last season.
