Rams Bounce Back with Sweep Over UNLV

Colorado State claims first win over Rebels in Vegas since 2019

LAS VEGAS - The Colorado State Volleyball team bounced back Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep of UNLV after falling in five to San Deigo State earlier this week. With a strong offensive front and scrappy defensive back line, the Rams won the three sets 25-23, 25-18 and 25-19.

The first set kicked off a massive performance from redshirt senior Malaya Jones who went for nine kills at a .438 hitting percentage through just the first frame. As a team, the Rams outhit the Rebels .250 to .132 and out dug UNLV 17-10 to start strong and take the first set 25-23.

Jones continued to add eight kills in the second set, joining forces with Naeemah Weathers in the front row who totaled seven kills at a .583 hitting percentage through two frames. Fifth-year setter Emery Herman, who finished the night with 38 assists, led her offense to a .500 kill rate with 28 assists through the second set of play with all the momentum leaning CSU.

With all cylinders firing in favor of the Rams, it was decision time for Colorado State. With the Rams' most recent two matches both going into five sets, including a full reverse sweep loss Thursday against San Diego State on the road, the Rams needed to buckle down mentally to be able to get out of Las Vegas with a sweep and continue their pursuit of being a strong road team in the Mountain West.

The Rebels turned on the jets to start the third set, testing the Rams in just that and looking to force a fourth and hopefully fifth set at Cox Pavilion, opening the set on a 6-2 run and later extending to a 10-6 lead. Inching back into the set thanks to offense from Jones and Weathers and two blocks from Kennedy Stanford, it was a Jordyn Tynsky service run that helped pull the Rams into the lead in the third.

Trading side outs to notch the score at 17-16 in favor of the Rams, Colorado State finished the game with a 67.2 side out percentage while fifth-year six-rotation outside hitter Stanford led the Rams on a 5-0 service run to force match point. Forcing three attack errors by the Rebels, including two team blocks, and having the match ultimately ending in an out of rotation error on UNLV, Colorado State was back on track with a win, moving to 7-2 in conference.

Jones finished the night with a double-double featuring 21 kills and 10 blocks at a .486 hitting percentage while Weathers dominated the middle of the court with nine kills at a .529 clip. Other key contributors for the Rams include Stanford who totaled seven kills, Karina Leber who added six kills and three blocks as well as a strong defensive game from Aine Doty who totaled eight digs, finishing second only behind Jones on the Rams' roster.

Colorado State will continue conference play next week as they trave to New Mexico Thursday evening before returning back to Moby Arena to host Air Force Saturday afternoon in a volleyball-football doubleheader in Fort Collins.
