Rams win three of five matches in the first round
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Mountain West's best came together to make a run at invitations to future ITA events this fall as the Mountain West Fall Individuals tournament opened Wednesday at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas.
Â
Colorado State's women's team found some success in the early going winning three-of-five first-round matches, and at the end of the day the Rams had one line still remaining in the doubles draw.
Â
Victoria Erechtchenko and Sarah Weekley rallied to take out the fourth-seeded team from New Mexico, posting an 8-7 (5) victory over Maria Sodre and Rebekkah Gaines. They will face San Diego State's Gloria Alogo Piqueras and Ninon Martinche in Thursday's quarterfinal round, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Â
The Rams also won two of the three singles matches in the first round, both wins coming in straight sets. Weekley beat Charlote Gisclon of Fresno State, 6-3, 6-3; while Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya knocked off Arianna VanHouweling of Air Force, 6-2, 6-0. Both ran into seeded players in the round of 16, each falling in straight sets.
Â
With the tournament being a two-match guarantee, only Erechtchenko will play a consolation singles match Thursday, with that round expected to start around 1 p.m. There are no consolation matches in doubles with only the winners in each of the women's brackets qualifying for further ITA play.
