Colorado State suffers first setback of Mountain West play
SAN DIEGO - Colorado State's 10-match unbeaten streak came to an end Sunday afternoon following 1-0 loss against San Diego State, the Rams first loss of Mountain West play,
The setback puts CSU (11-4-3, 7-1-2 MW) three points behind Boise State with one match to go in the Mountain West regular season title race.
Redshirt freshman Libby Brooker kept the Rams in the match with seven saves in a scoreless half. San Diego State generated multiple opportunities in the shooting lanes with seven shots on goal. The Aztecs offensive pressure and possession helped them to outshoot the Rams 15-4 maintaining 60% of possession.
In the second half, the Rams made some changes to the lineup and were able to play more balanced, accumulating more opportunities.
After getting out-shot in the first half, CSU responded out-shooting SDSU12-9 in the second 45. The best chance of the game came from Mia Casey's shot in the 86th minute, but her shot found the top of the Aztec goalkeeper's glove.
With an action-packed second half full of fouls, both teams playing quickly and battling as they were trying to break the draw, the Aztecs were able to find the back of the net in the 87th minute. A cross inside the box found the foot of Dori Savage and the back of the net for the decisive goal.
Colorado State will host its last home game October 31 at 4 p.m. against Wyoming for its Orange Out before beginning Mountain West Tournament play in a week.
