Freshmen Froebe and Carlson provide spark off the bench in opening win.
FORT COLLINS - Colorado State women's basketball used a strong second half to earn an exhibition win over Regis, 68-57, on Tuesday night in Moby Arena. A pair of newcomers led the Rams in scoring as transfer Emma Ronsiek (17) and freshman Kloe Froebe (13) powered CSU to the victory.Â
Â
As with any early-season exhibition, there were a lot of learning objectives to grow from. In the opening frame both teams traded points with neither side able to pull ahead by more than a four. The Rams went scoreless for the final 2:53 of the first quarter and struggled from 3-point range (0-8) across the first half, which put them behind, 25-24, at the halftime break.Â
Â
"We played with a little anxiety and not very good togetherness a lot in that game," head coach Ryun Williams said.  "It's going to take us a while to find our way with this group, and to find who we want out there at the right time."Â
Â
With the third quarter underway, Rams quickly regained the lead by finding the rim, showcasing strong defensive play and holding the Rangers scoreless for a 4:33 stretch. By the end of the quarter, Colorado State had pulled ahead 43-37, with Emma Ronsiek leading her team with 11 points.Â
Â
With a lot of different lineups to show for the night, the Rams were able to find their way into the paint and figure out how the night needed to go. Doing exactly that, the Rams found their composure both offensively and defensively and controlled the lead throughout the final 10 minutes to secure the win.Â
Â
A big story entering the 2024-25 season was the eight new faces on CSU's roster, such as freshmen Froebe and Brooke Carlson, who despite their label did not play like they were new to the scene at all. The duo from Illinois finished with a combined 21 points, playing a large role in CSU's 25 points off the bench. Williams called each of the guards playmakers with no moment too big for them. Froebe knew what was needed from her which was to "Rebound offensively and defensively, crash and be tough," and she did exactly that to contribute to the team being the second leading scorer and rebounder (7).
Â
Even with all of the new, some things never change. Despite the frustrating opening score and defensive struggles, Colorado State dominated in the turnover battle by only giving the ball away six times to the Rangers' 15. This has become a staple of Colorado State's play in recent years as the Rams have led the nation in fewest turnovers over the past two seasons. Â
Â
With the exhibition behind them and the season-opener against San Francisco in front, Williams is happy with what he's seen thus far. "I like our group, and we just have to put the pieces together."
