Colorado State to play Fresno State and San Jose State in final regular season roadtrip

FORT COLLINS – The Colorado State volleyball team enters its eighth week of conference play, set to travel to California to face Fresno State Thursday and San Jose State Saturday after a successful week seven.

What You Need to Know

  • The Rams have maintained their first-place spot in the Mountain West and are on the road to compete in two crucial games against second ranked San Jose State ranked second in the Mountain West and fourth ranked Fresno State.
  • Colorado State can clinch at least a share of the Mountain West Regular Season title with a win Thursday or Saturday. The Rams can clinch the outright title with a 2-0 week.
  • Colorado State defeated Fresno State in four sets earlier this season while also defeated San Jose State in three sets.
 
Scouting the Bulldogs and Spartans 
  • Fresno State takes on Colorado State after falling to San Diego State in five sets and UNLV in four during week seven, leaving the Bulldogs currently ranked fourth in the Mountain West. 
  • The Bulldogs have looked to senior outside hitter Ella Rud and junior opposite Addison Haluska to lead their offense to success. Haluska currently leads the Bulldogs in kills during conference play with 241, good for second in the Mountain West while Rud has 186 kills in conference play good for eighth in the Mountain West. In addition to her strength in the front row for the Bulldogs, Rud also leads the Mountain West in service aces, totaling 29 so far during conference play. Haluska and Rud have seen success on offense, largely due to senior setter Brooke Cowie who is currently ranked second in the Mountain West with 571 assists and an average of 10.02 per set. The Bulldogs show their strengths throughout every pocket of the court as sophomore libero Dionii Fraga leads the Mountain West in digs with a total of 255 and averaging 4.47 per set. 
  • The Spartans are facing the Rams this week after falling to both UNLV and San Diego State in four sets, leaving them ranked second in the Mountain West with a 11-4 conference record.
  • Redshirt senior Blaire Fleming leads the team in kills with 149, good for fifth in the Mountain West with a kill-per-set average of 3.82. The Spartans front row has also been supported by senior Brooke Bryant and redshirt sophomore Nayeli Ti'a who have both recorded over 145 kills in total this season and adds to the powerhouse of the Spartan offense. The offense is led by senior setter Brooke Slusser who has recorded 259 assists during conference play, putting her at seventh in the Mountain West. The Spartans have also shown their strength behind the service line with the second, third, and fourth-highest number of service aces all going to San Jose State. 
 
Match Notes
  • Malaya Jones was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week as well as the Colorado State Waterpik Student Athlete of the Week for the second time this season. Jones earns these titles after a dominating 31 kills in 55 attempts performance against Boise State, setting the four-set single-match school record with 31 kills and a hitting percentage of .509. Jones also led the defense during Saturday's match recording a season-high 15 digs.
  • Karina Leber dominates in Tuesday's match against Wyoming leading the team with 18 kills, also a season-high. Leber didn't stop there, recording eight blocks during the week, leading the team with five blocks in Saturday's match. In the same match, Leber broke the career school record for sets played, as this match brought her to 498 sets played as a Ram. 
  • Emery Herman broke 100 assists over the two games in week seven with 52 against Wyoming and 50 against Boise State. Herman continues to lead the Mountain West in assists, recording 602 during conference and averaging 11.17 per set. 
  • Kennedy Stanford joins Leber and Jones in breaking school record as she set the career school record in service aces after recording her 101st career service ace in Saturday's match against Boise State. 
  • Naeemah Weathers continues to lead the Mountain West and is within the top five in the NCAA in hitting percentage with 150 kills in 266 attempts for a percentage of .444.
