Colorado State falls to Fresno State in four-set match
FRESNO, Calif.– The Colorado State volleyball team fell to the Fresno State Bulldogs Thursday night on the road after taking the first set, but ultimately dropping the following three to move to 12-3 in Mountain West conference play. The Rams still have the opportunity to clinch at least a portion of the Mountain West title with a win on Saturday against San Jose State.Â
The Rams came out strong, claiming set one with a score of 25-19. Malaya Jones and  Naeemah Weathers ran the offense in the first set, Jones dropping six kills and Weathers going five-for-five in kills. Weathers continued to show her strength at the net with three blocks in set one alone and ended the night with five total.Â
Jones, the reigning Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week, finished the night with 19 kills and a hitting percentage of .326, reaching double-digit kills in her thirteenth match during conference play. Weathers also reached double-digits, recording 11 kills in four sets and maintaining above a .500 hitting percentage for the eighth time during conference play.Â
After set one, the Bulldog's offense came alive, ultimately picking up their momentum and allowing them to take the following three sets, 25-19, 25-17, and 25-20. As the Bulldogs gained momentum, the Rams fell flat, struggling to come back alive on defense despite some lineup switches. The Bulldogs ended the night with 54 kills and 11 blocks. With the Bulldogs adding 10 service aces in addition to the Rams' 12 service errors, the battle at the service line was a big contribution to the Colorado State loss. Without the Rams' strong defense, they were incapable of fighting back sets two through four.Â
Other contributions for the Rams include, Emery Herman ending the night with a double-double for the seventh time during conference play, recording 41 assists and 12 digs with libero Kate Yoshimoto also reaching double digits, recording 10 digs.
The Rams will continue their road trip traveling to San Jose, California to face San Jose State Saturday at 12 p.m. mountain time.
