Froebe scores 14 as Rams fall to BYU in first road game of the season.
PROVO, Utah – Colorado State women's basketball took a six-point lead into halftime of Wednesday's road game against BYU but were outpaced in the second half, falling 69-55 for its first loss of the season.
Â
After opening the game with lockdown defense and getting to their spots offensively, the Rams (2-1) were able to keep the Cougars (3-0) at bay in the opening 20 minutes. The tune changed in the third quarter as the home team rattled off 26 points and used a full-court defensive scheme to disrupt Colorado State, outscoring the Rams by 14 in the third frame. Despite a 7-0 run to open the fourth, Colorado State was unable to eliminate the deficit and took its first loss of the young season.
Â
"It's a game that we can learn a lot from," head coach Ryun Williams said. "I thought our kids played hard and battled and did all that, but we couldn't find enough easy stuff tonight."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: Colorado State opened the game with effective movement offensively, spreading the ball around to the tune of 19 points on 53.3-percent shooting from the floor. On the defensive end the Rams held the Cougars to just 13 points and frustrated the home team at the 3-point line (1-for-6).
Â
The physicality ramped up in the second quarter as each team settled into their defensive gameplans. The teams combined for just 6-of-31 shooting from the floor and each scored just nine points as CSU maintained their six-point advantage entering the break. Colorado State was led in scoring by forward Jadyn Fife (8) and freshman Kloe Froebe (6), who looked calm and confident in the first road start of her career.
Â
"Kloe is a scoring guard," Williams said. "She can drive and finish and she is really strong. And she's really good defensively, she can keep the ball in front so that's why she's started two of our three games this year."
Â
A momentum-changing sequence opened the third quarter as Colorado State picked up a technical foul on the opening possession of the game, leading to two free throws for BYU to open the scoring. A layup on the ensuing possession made it a one-score game, then a 3-pointer from freshman guard Delaney Gibb (19 points) put the Cougars on top just minutes later.
Â
"BYU made some big threes," Williams said. "I know they only shot 25% from three but they were timely. They made some big ones, and that momentum swing right at the beginning of the third quarter, with the technical foul and they make two free throws and then bomb a three, that really got everybody in this arena going."
Â
Colorado State took back the lead on a driving layup by Utah native Kaylee Headrick, but the Cougars went on to score 14 of the game's next 17 points to take full control of the game. Froebe – who finished the game with a team-high 14 points – did her best to get the Rams back in it as she scored four points to spark a 7-0 run to start the fourth quarter, but BYU did not back down and settled back in for the remainder of the game.
Â
"Although we didn't turn it over but 10 times, we just couldn't get into a whole lot," Williams said. "We were kind of disorganized offensively for a lot of the night. We did get some things going there in the latter part of the third entering the fourth, we really tried to spread them out and drive it and make it easy."
Â
Emma Ronsiek joined Froebe as a double-digit scorer, notching 10 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Fife was the third Ram in double figures as she finished the game with a career-high 10.
Â
Up next for the Rams is a home game against Columbia College on Saturday (Nov. 16) at 1 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets to Moby Madness by visiting CSURams.com/WBBTickets.
