Rams Fall to San Jose State in Five

Colorado State suffers second loss of road trip to Spartans

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Colorado State volleyball team fell to the San Jose State Spartans Saturday afternoon in five sets as the Rams continue the battle towards a regular season championship.
 
Defense and serve-receive geared another loss for the Rams on the road, this time against the No. 2 team in the conference. Giving up 16 ace serves with a reception percentage of .832 in addition to the Spartans' ability to rally off runs on their home court, Colorado State will return to Fort Collins with a 3-2 loss.
 
In the first set, despite only two lead changes and the Rams holding the lead majority of the set, the Spartans were able to force deuce scoring at take set one by a 27-25 score.
 
The Rams, knowing they led the Spartans in every major category in the first set, stormed back in the second set to tie things up at one all. Kate Yoshimoto contributed both her service aces in the second set to go along with Malaya Jones' six kills and Emery Herman's 10 assists. Colorado State claimed the win 25-18.
 
With emotions running high for the Spartans on San Jose State's senior night, it was the senior class especially that turned things up even further in set three for both teams. Outside hitters Blaire Fleming and Nayeli Ti'a contributed six and five kills respectively for the Spartans while Jones continued to take the main load for Colorado State. But it was the only set the Spartans out-blocked the Rams, fueling the home court advantage with every stuff, propelling San Jose State to win the advantage set 25-17.
 
In the fourth, to Colorado State seniors in Kennedy Stanford and Karina Leber stepped up the occasion, both hitting over .400with five and six kills respectively. In addition to two block assists from Leber, the Rams forced a fifth set with a 25-19 fourth frame victory.
 
Heading into the fifth, without either team able to any game changing momentum even though it felt like every hard hit ball or block that hit the ground sent one side of the net into eruption, it was the Spartans that were able to reach the finish line of the race to 15 first, pulling away on a 9-8 lead to finish it 15-10.
 
The Rams still have two more games left in the regular season, both in Moby Arena next week as they host Nevada and Utah State. Colorado will host Nevada Thursday at 6 p.m. before hosting Utah State on senior day Saturday at noon.
