What You Need to Know
- The Rams closed off regular season play Saturday, finishing as the No. 1 seed going into the Mountain West tournament. This has secured them a first-round bye, with their first game on Friday instead of Wednesday when the quarterfinals of the tournament will commence.
- San Diego State defeated the Fresno State Wednesday in the quarterfinal round to advance to a semi-final matchup with the Rams.
- If the Rams win on Friday, they will secure a spot in the Championship game where they will face the winner of No. 2 San Jose State, who earned the second first round bye and either No. 3 Utah State or No. 6 Boise State who will face off in the quarterfinal round Wednesday.
Scouting the Tournament Bracket
- Colorado State will face San Diego State in the semi-final round of the tournament, after splitting matches during the regular season, falling to the Aztecs in five during round one of conference play, then returning the favor by sweeping them during round two. Overall, the Aztecs have looked to Taylor Underwood to lead their offense, as she has recorded 196 kills on the season, good for ninth in the Mountain West. Shea Rubright also shows her strength on offense for the Aztecs, with a hitting percentage of .423, ranking third in the Mountain West.Â
- With a win on Friday, the Rams would move to the Championship game, where the favored No. 2 seed is San Jose State. The Spartans also received a first-round bye as they finished second in the Mountain West, so they will not compete until Friday, where they will face the winner of Utah State and Boise State. The Rams also split their matches against the Spartans during conference play, sweeping them in round one, and then falling in five sets in the second to last week of conference. The Spartans have consistently looked to Blaire Fleming and Brooke Slusser to lead their offense, with Fleming recording 194 kills good for fourth in the Mountain West, and Slusser with 341 assists, ranking seventh in the Mountain West.Â
- San Jose State will face the winner of Utah State vs Boise State with both the Aggies and Broncos being potential matchups for the Rams as well. Colorado State took wins over Utah State in both matches it faced, taking the win in five sets during round one of conference play, and then winning in four sets this past Saturday to round out conference play. The Rams split their matches against the Broncos, falling to them in round one of conference play in five sets and then coming back and beating them in four sets in a revenge match in Moby Arena.Â
