The Secrets in the Spaces

12/16/2024 9:17:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Women's basketball wins final home game of 2024.

The numbers speak for themselves, but reading between the lines can aid immensely.

By all accounts, Colorado State women's basketball played to win on Monday holding UTEP to just 5 points and 1-of-13 from the field in the first quarter.

Along with a wild card, Kloe Froebe, the game started with a true fighting energy. The true freshman dropped a game-high 15 points with Emma Ronsiek being close behind with 13.

The game ended 70-52 adding another win to CSU's total after playing Gonzaga last week in an overtime win. Afterwards, Ryun Williams looked at some freshman a tad bit differently.

"(Kloe and Brooke Carlson) were good, Kloe especially right out of the gate," Williams said. "Brooke really brings a different energy and pace to the lineup. But they both stay on the floor if they guard really well.

"And that's what usually pulls freshman off the floor. Sustaining the intensity as well as the execution and limiting mistakes is usually hard for new players. But these kids are way ahead of schedule that way."

Froebe has had a three-game stretch shooting 1-of-6 from the field and her redemption arc is palpable.

Getting the intensity needed and going for the shots, though fearful, helped the first-year find her rhythm.

"Basketball is a game of ups and downs," Froebe said. "I just had to find my rhythm again and it's great to have one of those games to get back in the positive on scoring. (Coach Williams) is always pushing me to be better and be the best I can. It's really nice to have their support where they always push me to do the best."

As well as they played, the third quarter got away from them. Shooting 18% and allowing more shots for UTEP, which shot 38% in the frame.

Winning them all and not making mistakes is not the central goal. Being able to get up after falling or missing a shot is what truly matters, something Ronsiek knows.

"I didn't entirely know what this game was going to look like," Ronsiek said. "Obviously transferring, you play entirely different teams. I just knew that last year (UTEP) played CSU close, so I wasn't expecting the game to look like this. At the same time, we have to expect what's going to be thrown at us. It's a game of runs."

The game of runs not only shows up in the minds of players but on the box score.

As for their win against UTEP, Williams knows to pinpoint the little pieces between the lines which allow points to pass by.

"We had some stretches where we played really good basketball," Williams said. "And I thought we had some stretches where we were a little silly and we just got out of character. We saw some quick shots and we call them 'one-pass jacks'.

"How about we make somebody play a little defense? Maybe get a layup? We fall in love with that quick 3 too much. It didn't bite us tonight, but I told the kids that if this were a closer game, you are going to kick yourself because of some shot selection."

The minute details could seem futile.

However, with a tough stretch to come at the San Diego State Classic against Georgia and Stephen F. Austin, the team prepares any way it can.

Part of which is riding the high all the way to practice and keeping teammates close.

"You can have people step up," Ronsiek said. "There's going to be different players in each game so it's cool to see that we can rely on each other for this. We will end these two games in San Diego and get to go home for a couple of days. But then, coming back, we're not going to skip a beat because we're all determined basketball players that all care deeply for each other."

Reading between the lines might seem like a waste of time, but as the season progresses, it might just be an important advantage.
