RAM TALK
- The Week That Was: It was far from an ideal start as Colorado State fell 20 points behind Gonzaga when the teams went to the locker rooms at halftime. However, the Stalwart Rams did not give up as they outscored the Bulldogs 24-9 in the third quarter and won the game in overtime on a buzzer-beating layup from freshman guard Brooke Carlson.
- Protect The Rock: The Rams do a lot of good things, but one of their secrets to success is actually something they DON'T do: Turn the ball over. The Rams have led the nation in fewest turnovers per game in each of the last two seasons, coughing it up only 9.1 times per game in 2023-24. Despite the new-look roster, that trait seems to have been passed down to this year's squad as the Rams are giving up an average of just 8.8 turnovers through 10 games, which leads the country. The Green and Gold are one of just two teams in Division I to average less than 10 turnovers per game, and no other team in the MW is averaging less than 12.
- Coming Out Party: In the words of head coach Ryun Williams, last week's win over Gonzaga was a "coming out party" for freshman guard Brooke Carlson. The Illinois native came off the bench to register 18 points, five assists and two steals and served as the spark plug in CSU's monster second-half comeback. Carlson was recognized by the MW for her efforts, becoming the first player in league history to earn Freshman of the Week and Player of the Week in the same period.
- One of One: Emma Ronsiek has been one of the most well-rounded players in the Mountain West this season with her ability to impact the game in multiple ways. Ronsiek is currently the only player in the league to average at least 15.0 points (17.2), 5.5 rebounds (5.6) and 3.0 assists (3.2), and leads Colorado State in each of those categories. At the national level, Ronsiek is the only player to lead her team (including ties) in rebounds, assists, free throws made, 3-point field goals made and 2-point field goals made. This past week, the MW Co-Preseason Player of the Year was named a national player of the week by the US Basketball Writers Association.
- Down But Not Out: Things looked bleak when Colorado State entered the locker room trailing Gonzaga by 20 points in their last game. However, the Rams battled back to erase the deficit and came through with an overtime win in front of 5,500 fans. You should never count the Rams out as they have a 4-2 record this season when trailing at the halftime break, and have two wins when trailing after the third quarter.
- Gettin' Defensive: Colorado State has been one of the top defenses in the nation this season, stifling opponents to just 33.2% shooting from the floor which is the 10th-best mark in the country. The Rams are limiting opponents to just 56.8 points per game, which is top 60 nationally and the third best in the Mountain West. 60 is the limit when it comes to the Green and Gold defensively, as six of their seven wins have come when holding their opponents below 60 points.
SCOUTING REPORT
- The UTEP Miners: Colorado State and UTEP are strikingly similar on paper on the offensive end, with the Rams averaging 67.1 points per game on 41.2-percent shooting while the Minors average 67.9 points per game and 43.3-percent shooting. The Miners run a deep rotation with nine players averaging over 13 minutes per game and are led in scoring by guard Ivane Tensaie (17.0 ppg).
- Â The Georgia Bulldogs: The Bulldogs bring a balanced offensive attack to the table as they have four players that average at least 10 points per game. Freshman forward Mia Woolfock, a four-start recruit, recently made her collegiate debut and posted an 18-point, 13-rebound double-double, and her 6-foot-3 presence could pose a threat to CSU down low.
- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks: The Lumberjacks were ranked No. 25 in College Insider's latest women's Mid-Major Top 25 Poll, which was released last Monday. SFA averages an impressive 79.8 points per game and are 13th nationally with a shooting percentage of 49.5. This will be a proving ground game for Colorado State's defense, which ranks 10th nationally in opponent field goal percentage at 33.2.
