Early Deficit Too Much to Overcome

Rams dealt loss in final non-conference game.
SAN DIEGO – Colorado State women's basketball fell behind by double digits in the first quarter, and despite 14 fourth-quarter points from Hannah Simental the Rams were unable to come back in an 80-69 loss to Stephen F. Austin on Saturday afternoon at the San Diego Classic.
Â
The Ladyjacks (9-2) jumped on the Rams (9-4) early in the first quarter with hot shooting and a disruptive full-court press that saw the Green and Gold fall into a 23-9 hole after the opening 10 minutes. The remainder of the game was competitive as CSU outscored SFA across the final three periods, but the early deficit was too much to overcome in the end.
Â
Emma Ronsiek led the Rams in scoring once again with 19 points and was joined in double-figures by Simental (17) – who made four 3-pointers in the final period – and Hannah Ronsiek (12). The loss was just the fourth of the season for Colorado State which shifts its focus to Mountain West play beginning Dec. 29 against Utah State on the road.
Â
How It Happened
Just as Colorado State had done in each of its last two games, Stephen F. Austin opened the contest with a dominant first quarter. The Rams were held to just nine points on 4-for-14 shooting, while the Ladyjacks were getting what they wanted on the offensive end to the tune of 23 points on 60.0-percent shooting from the field. The full-court press of SFA threw a wrench into CSU's offensive rhythm as the national leader in turnovers per game (8.8) coughed the ball up five times in the first ten minutes of action.
Â
Colorado State was a much more competitive team in the second quarter as a Kaylee Headrick 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer brought the lead down to 12. The third quarter was a back-and forth affair as SFA's shot-making ability (48.9 field goal percentage entering the game) prevented CSU from scoring back-to-back buckets at any point in the period.
Â
Trailing by 14 points entering the fourth quarter, time still remained for another late comeback from Colorado State. With seven minutes to play, Simental pulled the trigger from the right side of the floor and drained the first of what turned into three-straight 3-point baskets for her, but each of her triples was answered by a bucket on the other end by Stephen F. Austin. The Ladyjacks continued to show poise as they offered an answer to each Ram basket the remainder of the way, keeping CSU from making any real threat at capturing the lead.
