Women’s team pulls into first place ahead of championship Saturday

FRESNO, Calif. - The Colorado State track and field team wrapped up day two of the 2024 Outdoor Mountain West Championship Meet Friday with the women's team leading heading into day three and the men's team in second.

Big action took place in the women's shot put with Mya Lesnar and Gabi Morris going one and two, both throwing marks over Morris' meet record from last season. Lesnar's last throw of the competition landed at 19.08 meters, good for an outdoor Mountain West Championship to match her indoor title from February, an outdoor personal best, a meet record, an extension on her already owned school record and the second-best mark in the nation. Morris' mark of 17.52 meters ranks her fourteenth in the nation so far this season, earning her silver.

Mariano Kis made it a clean sweep for the Rams in the men's shot put, claiming his sixth Mountain West shot put title across both indoor and outdoor seasons with an outdoor career best mark of 18.55 meters.

Yasmin Austridge added another individual championship to the Rams' resume, winning the women's 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:58.75 seconds, breaking the school record and propelling the Rams back into first place in team points.

Friday began with both the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon as Mauricio Galindo Vega and Tereza Babicka both podiumed for the Rams. Galindo Vega finished second in the decathlon with a score of 7,242 points after making his return to the track this season. Babicka doubled up her third-place finish in the indoor pentathlon from the indoor season with a bronze finish in the heptathlon. She recorded a personal best score of 5,204 points.

Rhys Travis added six points to the Rams' cause, placing third in the men's high jump clearing 2.05 meters.

Nine Rams punched their ticket to championship Saturday in their respective races, qualifying during the Friday prelims. Cole Nordman, Carsen Bruns and Dominic Gallelli all qualified in the men's 110 meter hurdles. Cal Banta qualified in the men's 1500 meter run. Tom Willems and Kenny Carpenter both punched their ticket to the men's 400 meter dash finals. Taye Holker qualified in the women's 100 meter dash while Tyler Colwell and Cole Nordman both qualified in the men's 100 meter dash.

Championship Saturday will kickoff at 2 p.m. mountain time with the women's discus.
