Rams notch first win as true freshman Brun makes debut

The small things lead to big changes.

The Colorado State women's volleyball team eked out their first win of the season against Central Arkansas in a 3-1 match. The Rams made a lot of small adjustments, and they had some key players, new and returning, which gave them the final push to success.

The Rams came out healthier than ever with true freshman Maria Brun making her debut in the lineup in the 25-21, 19-25, 25-15, 25-21 victory Saturday at Moby Arena.

During the summer months, Brun had an injury that kept her out of the first four matches. In today's game she had seven kills with a hit percentage of .267 and 10 points over four sets.

"(Brun) did a really nice job going into her first match here and impacting everything positively both as an attacker, but also from the service line," coach Emily Kohan said.

Brun, who is originally from Spain, said the most challenging part of adjusting to the team has been how fast they play the ball, but she has gotten a lot of support from her teammates.

"Now I think I am adjusting to the team, and I am feeling good," Brun said.

On top of having Brun join the lineup, the team saw improvement in their back-row passing and has found success with some of the lineups they have tried. With redshirt junior Kate Yoshimoto in the lineup for the past two games the team has been trying out some different outside-hitter options.

"Nobody wants to start 0-4 and now the damn has cracked here so we can build on that," Kohan said.

To help crack it open, Malaya Jones and Karina Leber both had season highs in kills with 26 and 12, respectively. This was the third match this season Jones has posted at least 20 kills, and Saturday represented the second consecutive night. Leber's production came on an incredibly effective night as she hit .733.

The team finished the match with a hitting percentage of .374 and three aces as setter Emery Herman finished with a double-double of 42 assists to go with 10 digs, and both middles were effective, as Naeemah Weathers added eight kills.

"It was good to get this win finally," Leber said. "We've been working hard for it, and we deserve it."

The team put in the work and made the changes necessary to success. With their stronger passing game, big blocking game, and healthy lineup they achieved their first win, and they are ready to continue their efforts. The Rams return to the court Sunday (1 p.m.) with a match against Grand Canyon.
