Women's basketball earns emphatic win over San Jose State
FORT COLLINS – It was all Rams on Saturday as Colorado State women's basketball dominated San Jose State 87-51 at Moby Arena to improve to 3-0 in Mountain West play.
Â
The Rams (12-4, 3-0 MW) used another huge first quarter to take the upper hand early, building a 30-13 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. Colorado State outscored the Spartans (7-9, 0-3 MW) in each of the remaining three quarters, finishing the day with a season-high 87 points.
Â
Quality ball movement was the theme of the day for CSU offensively as the team dished out a season-high 25 assists which fueled four double-digit scorers. Emma Ronsiek led the way with 20 points – her fourth 20-point performance in five games – while Brooke Carlson dropped 13 points and a career-high eight assists. Joining the double-digit scoring was Hannah Ronsiek (13 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) and Kloe Froebe (11 points, 6 rebounds). Nine Rams entered the box score on the day, with seven scoring more than five points.
Â
The defensive effort was just as impressive as Colorado State forced 17 turnovers and limited San Jose State to 32.8% shooting from the field. The Rams held the Spartans below 15 points in each of the first three quarters and used that to build a solid foundation on the offensive side.
Â
How It Happened
Big first quarters have become a theme in recent Ram wins as once again CSU was ready from the opening tip. The Rams shot a blistering 66.7% from the field with five 3-pointers, led by Carlson and Emma Ronsiek who each scored seven points in the opening frame. Hannah Simental drained two 3-pointers herself, which helped Colorado State post its highest-scoring quarter of the season.
Â
Offenses for both teams were grounded in the second quarter as the teams combined for just 25 points in the period. Colorado State's active hands forced five turnovers by San Jose State, while five points from Hannah Ronsiek and four from Froebe helped CSU build a 22-point lead at the break.
Â
Balanced scoring continued for CSU in the third as six Rams chipped in to score 20 points. The Rams were all over the Spartan shooters, holding them to just 21.4% shooting from the field and 20.0% from deep. A near six-minute scoring drought for San Jose State opened the door for a 10-0 run by Colorado State, which carried a 31-point lead into the fourth quarter.
Â
Protecting a healthy lead, the Rams stayed sturdy on the defensive end of the floor and went a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line to help close out a dominant win in front of the home fans.
Â
What's Next
The Rams hit the road for one of the toughest tests of the conference season as they take on three-time defending Mountain West Champion UNLV in Las Vegas on Wednesday (Jan. 8) at 7:30 p.m. MT.
