Most turnovers since 2021 leads to first conference loss.
LAS VEGAS – A turnover-stricken performance led to a 70-61 defeat for Colorado State women's basketball in battle against UNLV on Wednesday night at Cox Pavillion.
Â
The Rams (12-5, 3-1 MW) – who led the nation with 9.4 turnovers per game entering the contest – gave the ball away 18 times on the night, their most in a game since Jan. 29, 2021 when they turned it over the same number of times against Boise State. The active hands of the Lady Rebels (12-4, 4-0) caused problems for Colorado State all night long and created 21 points off turnovers, proving to be the difference maker in the game.
Â
Despite the difficulties protecting the ball, CSU shot 52.1% from the field and 36.4% from 3-point range. Three Rams finished the game in double-figures with Emma Ronsiek scoring 15 and Brooke Carlson and Marta Leimane each chipping in 11. Hannah Ronsiek came just short of another double-double as she posted eight points and nine rebounds.
Â
How It Happened
It was a back-and-forth first quarter as UNLV opened the game with five-straight points before CSU rattled off a 7-0 run of its own. The teams took their swings as Colorado State made each of its three attempts from deep while UNLV applied relentless pressure on the rim. As the opening 10 minutes came to a close, Joseana Vaz converted a layup attempt to give the Rams a 27-22 advantage.
Â
After protecting the ball well in the first quarter (four assists, one turnover), Colorado State fell victim to the active pressure of the Lady Rebels, turning the ball over seven times in the period. CSU was able to limit UNLV to just 35.3% shooting in the second quarter, but the Lady Rebels' 7-0 run in the latter stages of the half lifted them to a 38-36 lead at the break.
Â
Turnover woes continued into the second half as UNLV scored 16 points on six Colorado State turnovers in the third quarter, allowing the home side to build a bit of buffer. The Lady Rebels carried an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter, and although the Rams whittled it down to four points halfway through the fourth quarter the Green and Gold were unable to get over the hump.
Â
What's Next
The Rams continue their road trip next week as they travel to take on San Diego State on Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. MT. The two teams squared off just a week ago on Jan. 1, which resulted in a 67-56 win for CSU at home.
