Murphy leads scoring off the bench

In a final tuneup for the upcoming season, Colorado State women's basketball coach Ryun Williams saw all he needed to out of his team Wednesday night in an 81-26 home exhibition victory over Colorado Christian.

With an offense moving well and a defense playing connected, the Rams will head confidently into the season opener against Weber State at Moby Arena on Nov. 4. The Rams didn't allow double figures in any quarter to the Cougars, while the offense worked the floor with efficiency no matter the combination, with 12 different players logging minutes.

"I think our defense, as the game went on, grew even more connected. We kept the ball in front of us," Williams said. "We challenged our kids to switch all their ball screens. Where that probably hurt us a little bit was on the defensive glass. We had some of our guards trying to block off their interior-type players. But we showed a lot of fight, I thought. Again, we kept the ball in front of us. The only shots that they were getting, and that's how it was designed tonight, was contested 3s, and that's why the long rebounds."

Colorado State was led in scoring by McKenna Murphy off the bench. Hitting her first four attempts from the field – all 3s – she finished with 15 points and added seven rebounds. Sophomore Kloe Froebe registered a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Lexi Deden (12 points) and Brooke Carlson (11 points) worked their way into double figures, with Carlson leading the team with eight assists.

The Rams, long one of the nation's leaders in limiting turnovers, finished the night with just seven while creating 14, including eight steals. Deden added nine boards as CSU held a 50-31 advantage on the glass.

Colorado State was sharp from the floor, shooing 45.2 percent in the game. The reverse was holding the Cougars to a 14.8 percent clip and just 2-of-27 from deep.

The season will heat up immediately with four contests in the first 14 days of play, three of them at Moby Arena.
