Beers ties school mark for TD catches by a tight end
BOISE, Idaho – Both teams scored touchdowns on the opening possessions, but Colorado State couldn't keep the pace as Boise State went on to post a 49-21 victory Saturday night at Albertsons Stadium.
Â
The Broncos led 27-7 at intermission with all three of their running backs scoring on short runs, while Colton Boomer connected on two field goals, the hosts converting two Colorado State turnovers into 10 points.
Â
The Rams (2-9, 1-6 Mountain West), with Darius Curry, the third different starter at quarterback this season, tied the game at 7-all with an eight-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 3-yard scoring catch by tight end Rocky Beers. It was Beers' sixth scoring catch of the year to tie the single-season record for tight ends, one he shares with three others.
Â
Beers finished the game with seven catches for a career-best 94 yards and is now the team's leading receiver in terms of yardage (346).
Â
Boise State running back Sire Gaines extended the lead with his second scoring run of the game in the third quarter, surpassing the 100-yard mark on the drive. He finished with 149 yards as the Broncos rushed for 280 in the contest.
Â
The Rams responded with a pair of touchdowns, one set up by a 79-yard reception when Javion Kinnard took a swing pass and went 91-yards for a score and what would have been the second-longest pass play in school history, only he was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, negating the end of the play and setting CSU up at the Boise State 28. The drive was capped when Lloyd Avant scored on a 4-yard run.
Â
After Tommy Maher recovered an onside kick, setting up a drive that ended with a 6-yard scoring reception by Tay Lanier, his first of the season, making it a 34-21 game.
Â
After attempting another onside kick, Boise State produced another scoring drive with Malik Sherrod scoring his second rushing touchdown of the game, covering 24 yards. The Broncos scored on the 2-point try for the final margin, becoming the fourth team this season to go past 500 yards of total offense (534) against the Rams.
Â
Curry finished the game 26-of-46 for 295 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. He also fumbled once in the game, with Boise State scoring 17 points off those miscues, with Seth Knothe turning the last interception into a 9-yard scoring run for the final margin.
