Rams defeat San Diego State in four sets to continue season

LAS VEGAS — The Rams of Colorado State (21-8, 15-4 MW) clinched a 3-1 win over San Diego State (15-16, 9-9) at The Pavilion on Tuesday night in the semi-finals of the Mountain West Championship Tournament, with set scores of 18-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-13. The team boasted a .355 hitting percentage, shining especially in the flawless third set with 16 kills and no errors.

The match kicked off with the Aztecs grabbing an early lead thanks to a service ace and an attack error by Colorado State. The Rams quickly leveled the score at 2-2, taking advantage of a service error and a subsequent attack error from San Diego State. Colorado State briefly pulled ahead 6-4 after two attack errors were blocked by Eve Wilson and Erin Debiec. Yet, the Aztecs fought back, reclaiming the lead at 10-8 with a solid offensive push, including a kill by Talea Mitchell. Despite efforts from the Rams, with several key kills from Wilson and Kekua Richards, the Aztecs maintained their grip. San Diego State extended its lead to 19-15, showcasing a strong offensive run featuring a service ace and multiple kills. The Aztecs wrapped up the set at 25-18, punctuated by a decisive kill from Madison Corf.

In the second set, Colorado State found their rhythm early with a kill by Halle Jameson, assisted by Debiec, putting them on the scoreboard first. After a brief tie at 4-4, the Rams capitalized on a series of Aztec errors to regain and hold a critical lead. Colorado State maintained a narrow advantage, with standout performances from Maria Brun and Richards contributing crucial kills. As the set neared its end, Delaney McIntosh delivered a service ace, going on to total three on the night, and Brun added a kill to stretch the lead. The Rams claimed the set 25-20, setting a strong tone for the rest of the match.

Colorado State surged forward in the third set, maintaining momentum with the help of San Diego State's errors. After an early point exchange, Wilson and Brun delivered pivotal kills to keep things close. A standout moment came when Richards delivered back-to-back kills, assisted by Debiec, pushing Colorado State into a 9-7 lead. Although the Aztecs attempted to close the gap, their critical errors—both service and attack—allowed the Rams to extend their lead. Jameson sealed the set with a powerful kill, bringing it to 25-18. She recorded 13 kills, surpassing her season average of 10.57 and recording her tenth double-double of the season with 10 digs, while Richards chipped in with 12 kills, outdoing her average of 8.04.

In the fourth set, Colorado State locked in a commanding 25-13 win to finish off the match. Despite a service error by Brun that initially gave the Aztecs the lead, Jameson quickly responded with a kill, supported by Debiec, tying the score. The Rams then took control, capitalizing on San Diego State's attack errors, including a significant solo block by Debiec that pushed the score to 3-2. Wilson contributed crucial plays, adding multiple kills to extend Colorado State's lead. Karsyn Fetzer and McIntosh further bolstered the effort with a service ace each and capitalized on opponent errors. Debiec's dump kill, assisted by a Jameson reception, and consecutive service aces by Aine Doty, who recorded five set assists surpassing her season average of 3.96, secured the set and match for the Rams. Colorado State wrapped up the night with a decisive 25-13 set victory.

Wilson led the charge with 14 kills on 20 swings, achieving a .650 hitting percentage, and contributed three block assists. Debiec orchestrated the offense with 39 assists and added six total blocks, along with 13 digs—surpassing her season average of 9.75. Brun was a defensive dynamo, logging 15 digs, beyond her season average of 6.79, while also adding 12 kills. Richards added depth with 12 kills and four block assists, bolstering the team's overall effort.

The Rams will continue their season Saturday, advancing to the Mountain West Championship match November 29 at 4 p.m mountain time versus the No. 1 seeded Utah State Aggies, who still remain undefeated in Mountain West play.
