Rams Learn Lessons in Win Over Long Beach State

In a 73-34 win, there is still room for improvement.
Winning isn't the only marker to go off of.
Because as anyone in sports knows, there is always something else. Another milestone or goal. As teams develop, so too do its goals. Colorado State women's basketball showcased some developing wishes on Sunday with a 73-34 win over Long Beach State.
By halftime the scoreboard read 35-9 but the Rams were shooting 4-of-20 from 3. Taking any shot possible is encouraged, but coach Ryun Williams knew this kind of play wouldn't hold up against more difficult teams further down the schedule like Gonzaga later in the week.
Our message to our team is that we compete against the game, Williams said. Long Beach was the opponent. Weber was the opponent. But there's always a right way to do things from a focus standpoint, from an intensity standpoint to an execution standpoint. And we preach the waters are only going to get deeper. And we're going into the deep end on Thursday. There's no doubt about it. So our shot making is going to have to be a lot better. And we're just going to have to keep amping up the level of everything. But that's what I like about this group. Everything that we challenge them with; they really try to deliver.
Transfer Lexus Bargesser was up to the challenge and continued to stay at the glass getting five rebounds off her 11 points in the first half. The senior transfer comes from Indiana and off a career-high performance against Weber State with 22 points.
Her experience on the floor is obvious.
It's just super exciting to play in this arena, Bargesser said. There's great fans out there and I'm playing with a bunch of great girls who know how to spread the floor and score as well. So it's been fun.
She was joined by Hannah Ronsiek, a fourth-year Ram, who got 10 points throughout the time on the floor.
That doesn't mean younger players didn't get their shot though. The duo of Brooke Carlson and Kloe Froebe continued to get some points to pad the growing lead with 10 between them.
Up and down that lineup, I thought it showed quite well, Williams said. I think we'll be fairly happy with the film and how we spread the wealth around. And our bigs got the touches for the most part. I thought they really ran the floor well. And so, I like our depth. And again, each game calls for something different, and I thought everybody was really ready to go. Where it really showed was on the defensive end.
But with younger players also comes a dash of inexperience which can't be avoided. One thing that stands out is some shot selection from the younger Rams which were well placed but not entirely executed.
Because by the end of the day, the Rams were 6-of-34 from 3. Their field performance carried most of the scoreboard with 22-of-38. The emphasis on defense also showed in the 46 rebounds, 12 of them offensive into 14 second chance points.
I think we did great defensively and it was definitely a point that we wanted to get defensive boards and get out and that it would translate into our offense, Ronsiek said. So I think that we executed the game plan really well defensively.
Madelyn Bragg was part of that effort. Coming from DII Northern State, the senior came out after getting 12 points against Weber State, contributing 10 against the Beach.
And it all goes back to getting the ball moving to anyone who wants to make a shot—which includes those newer as well.
It was those kids seeing kind of their first action really on the Moby floor, Williams said. It's just good to get the anxiousness out of your system and get the feel of the game. All of that is going to be advantageous as you move forward, you know, because you just want kids knowing what's going on on the floor. You want them comfortable, and it was nice to get them those minutes.
This was an opportunity which couldn't be passed up. It was a chance to see what needed fine-tuning before taking on Gonzaga on Thursday. Because once it's out in the open, there's a chance to truly make some change.
