RAM TALK
  • The Week That Was: Colorado State picked up two important road wins as the Mountain West season reaches the midway point. The Rams avenged an earlier to loss against New Mexico with a 69-63 victory over the Lobos on national television, Wednesday, then followed it up with a gritty 67-61 win at Boise State on Saturday to complete the regular-season sweep of the Broncos.
  • Education Day: Colorado State is hosting its fifth-annual Education Day when they play Utah State on Wednesday. In partnership with Poudre School District and Thompson Valley School District, CSU will welcome over 5,000 fourth and fifth grade students to the game to create an atmosphere unlike any other. The Rams love playing on Education Day as they hold a perfect 4-0 record.
  • Protect The Rock: The Rams do a lot of good things, but one of their secrets to success is actually something they DON'T do: Turn the ball over. The Rams have led the nation in fewest turnovers per game in each of the last two seasons, coughing it up only 9.1 times per game in 2023-24. Despite the new-look roster, that trait has passed down to this year's squad as the Rams are giving up an average of just 9.2 turnovers, which is top of the country once again. The Green and Gold is the only team in Division I to average less than 10 turnovers per game and have three games this season with less than five turnovers.
  • Among The Best: Emma Ronsiek has been one of the most well-rounded players in the country this season with her ability to impact the game in multiple ways. Ronsiek is one of only 14 players nationally to average 19.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists against Division I opponents this season, joining the likes of women's basketball stars JuJu Watkins (Southern California), Hannah Hidalgo (Notre Dame), Flau'Jae Johnson (LSU) and Lauren Betts (UCLA).
  • 60's The Limit: Colorado State has been one of the top defensive teams in the Mountain West, holding opponents to just 37.1% shooting from the field (1st in MW, 37th nationally) and limiting teams to just 61.2 points per game (3rd in the MW). 60 has been the target number for the Rams defensively as 12 of their 17 wins this season have come when holding their opponents below that mark.
  • Don't Put Them On The Line: The Rams have not wasted their chances at the free-throw line this season, shooting 77.6% from the line as a unit which is first in the Mountain West and 22nd nationally. CSU's pair of Division I transfers have each been among the best free-throw shooters in the country over the past couple of seasons. Emma Ronsiek was the 12th-best shooter from the charity stripe last year, making 122-of-137 attempts (89.1). Hannah Simental was sixth in the nation with a 91.2% clip (104-114) in 2022-23, but did not take enough attempts to qualify for national rankings last season. Against Boise State, Ronsiek tied the program's best shooting performance from the charity stripe with a 12-for-12 performance.
  • Keep It Clean: Colorado State has been one of the cleanest teams in the nation this season, fouling just 13.5 times per game which is the 16th-fewest. CSU is surrendering just 9.7 points per game from free-throws, the third-fewest among MW teams.
  • Net Positive: Colorado State enters the week with a NET ranking of 90, making it one of three Mountain West schools inside the top 100: UNLV (48), Wyoming (82). In the RPI, Colorado State is ranked 70th which is also third behind UNLV (49) and Wyoming (66). The Rams will face both the Rebels (Feb. 22) and Cowgirls (March 1) at home later in the season.
SCOUTING REPORT
  • The Utah State Aggies: Utah State's record may be underwhelming, but it gave Colorado State a tight 83-74 contest when the two opened Mountain West play in Logan in late December. Senior guard Cheyenne Stubbs is the catalyst offensively for the Aggies as she averages a team-high 14.2 points per game.
  • The Air Force Falcons: Air Force is led in scoring by a guard tandem of Milahnie Perry (16.3 ppg) and Madison Smith (13.7 ppg), a duo that combined for 40 points in the first meeting with Colorado State. The Falcons also boast one of the most aggressive defenses in the MW, which leads conference with 9.8 steals per contest.
