Colorado State drops second match of the weekend
Tucson, Ariz. – Every loss encourages growth.Â
Â
Colorado State women's tennis finished its weekend in Arizona with a 4-1 loss to the Wildcats.Â
Â
Doubles partners Victoria Erechtchenko and Sarah Weekley are now 3-3 in the dual season with their 6-2 loss on Saturday. Arizona won the doubles point when Karissa Ghigiarelli and Zoya Chulak had a 6-1 win over Mariya Dobreva and Logan Voeks.Â
Â
Dobreva pushed her singles match to the third set for the second day in a row by winning the second set. Her match ended up unfinished at 6-2, 6-4, 1-0. Â
Â
Diana Lizarazo won her second singles match of the season 6-1, 6-3 against Karissa Ghigiarelli. Saturday's match was Lizarazo's third as a Ram after an injury early in the season.Â
Â
"I'm impressed with Diana's style of play," coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "She's mentally disciplined and has been able to overcome her injury and show up in a big way this weekend."Â
Â
The Rams lost at the No.2, No.3 and No.4 spots in singles finalizing the Wildcats 4-1 win. Despite losing, Voeks and Erechtchenko nearly won their first singles sets going 6-7 and 5-7, respectively. Voeks ended up losing her match 6-7, 6-1 and Erechtchenko had a similar finish 7-5, 6-0.Â
Â
"I'm proud of our progress as a team this weekend. We are doing the right things and I'm seeing our team get better each week. They've been receptive to our feedback," Tran said. "We always have room for growth, and we'll go back home, stay focused on improving. But overall many positives coming out of this weekend."Â
Â
CSU has two more matches before entering conference play. Tran sees every match as an opportunity for the team to learn and Saturday's loss to Arizona was no different.Â
