CSU earns first win at The Pit since 2017.
ALBUQUERQUE – Colorado State put together a total team effort Tuesday night to knock off New Mexico, 69-63, for its first win at The Pit since 2017.
Â
Coming off a home loss to Air Force, the Rams (16-7, 7-3 MW) faced the bright lights in their first nationally televised game of the season in an arena they had not won at in their last eight attempts. CSU showed focus in poise on both ends of the floor, shooting 48.1% from the field while forcing 14 turnovers on the defensive end.
Â
A furious first quarter saw a lot of offense from both teams, and as the game entered halftime CSU was holding onto a 41-36 lead. Colorado State put its foot on the gas in the third quarter, forcing five turnovers and allowing just nine points which enabled build some cushion with a 13-point advantage. Despite a difficult night from the free-throw line (11-for-19), CSU found enough buckets on the offensive end to maintain its lead and close out a challenging road win.
Â
Three Rams reached double-figures, led by Hannah Ronsiek's 17. Sister Emma Ronsiek tallied 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Hannah Simental tallied 14 points. Earning her second start of her CSU career, Kaylee Headrick was impactful on both sides of the ball and scored a career-high nine points, and Kloe Froebe turned in a solid outing with nine points and two offensive rebounds.
Â
How It HappenedÂ
The game started at a torrential pace as both teams were flowing on the offensive end of the floor. Four Rams scored at least five points in the opening period as the Green and Gold shot 62.5% from the field. However, New Mexico made each of its first three 3-point attempts and finished the quarter 5-for-8 from behind the arc, keeping pace as the Rams led 25-23 after the first quarter.
Â
CSU opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run, but a Lobo 3-pointer followed by a second-chance bucket stopped the momentum. Hannah Ronsiek scored five of her 14 first-half points in response, but a banked-in triple from New Mexico at the buzzer cut down the Rams' advantage, 41-36, at halftime.
Â
Simental got the Rams started on the right foot in the second half as she knocked down a 3-pointer right out of the break. Froebe played some important minutes in the early part of the quarter, collecting two offensive boards and getting to the bucket for an and-one before the media timeout. CSU locked down defensively, forcing five turnovers and limiting the Lobos to just nine points in the quarter, which allowed them to build the lead to 13 entering the fourth quarter.
Â
New Mexico strung together a 7-0 run at the beginning of the fourth quarter to begin its comeback attempt, trimming the lead to eight points with under six-and-a-half minutes to play. New Mexico brought the lead as low as seven points in the final five minutes, but CSU answered every Lobo bucket down the stretch to keep them at a distance and secure an important conference victory on the road.
