Colorado State kicks off opening weekend with a double header in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Colorado State softball team had its opening day February 6, which featured games against Cal Poly and Saint Mary's. The Rams walked away with a win over the Mustangs and just fell short to the Gaels after a back and forth battle. 
 
Game 1: Colorado State, 1 | Cal Poly, 0
  • Colorado State faced Cal Poly in a tightly contested matchup. The game remained scoreless through the first five innings as both teams struggled to find offensive momentum. Colorado State's pitcher, Reagan Wick, delivered a standout performance, keeping Cal Poly hitless and striking out eight batters over seven innings.
  • In the sixth inning, Jailey Wilson singled through the left side and was brought home by Kyra Smith's double to left center, giving the Rams a 1-0 lead. 
  • The game concluded with CSU securing a 1-0 victory, highlighted by Wick's complete game shutout, which ensured Cal Poly failed to register a single hit.
  • Wick delivered a standout performance, pitching a complete game shutout in the Rams' win over Cal Poly. Wick allowed no hits and struck out eight batters over seven innings, issuing only three walks. The junior's efficiency was evident with 57 strikes in 92 pitches, retiring 24 batters and facing just 20 at-bats. 
  • Smith contributed offensively with two hits, including a double, and drove in one run. Wilson scored one run and added a hit, playing a key role in the team's performance. Abby Edwards reached base with a walk and contributed defensively with eight putouts and one assist.
 
Game 2: Colorado State, 5 | Saint Mary's, 6
  • Colorado State started strong in the first inning with Jailey Wilson hitting a solo home run to left field, followed by Lindsey Hinson scoring on a single by Lauren Stucky, putting Colorado State up 2-0 after the first inning. 
  • In the fourth inning, Saint Mary's narrowed the lead to 2-1. They then took control with three runs in the fifth, leading 4-2. 
  • Colorado State responded in the sixth inning when Wilson's single drove in two runs, leveling the score at 4-4. However, Saint Mary's regained the lead in their half of the sixth with two runs, making it 6-4. 
  • Wilson recorded two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs. Stucky finished with three hits and added one RBI. Bradie Poteet-Herrea collected two hits and contributed an RBI. Andrea Jaskowiak pitched 4 innings, striking out five while allowing three earned runs.
 
Up Next: The Rams will compete in day two of the NorCal Kickoff on Saturday February 7, with games against San Diego at 10:30 a.m. and UC Davis at 3:30 p.m.
