Rams Sweep Aztecs In Conference Home Opener

The Colorado State softball team (23-11, 2-0 MWC) swept the San Diego State Aztecs (22-14, 0-2 MWC) in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams at Ram Field on Friday afternoon. The Rams shut out the Aztecs 2-0 in game one, and posted a 6-2 victory in game two.
Sophomore P Jessica Strickland held the Aztecs scoreless in game one and improved to 9-5 on the season. She struck out three batters and walked two in the complete-game victory. Strickland also doubled in senior 2B Stephanie Roberts in the bottom of the third inning to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore OF Brittany Huerta put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, adding her second home run of the season to give the Rams the 2-0 victory.
The Aztecs threatened in the seventh inning with three straight two-out singles, but the Rams? defense preserved the shut out.
Game two began as a defensive battle, until the Rams scored three runs in the third inning on a Roberts home run to take a lead they would never relinquish. Roberts? shot, her team-leading fourth of the season, knocked in junior P Genevieve Kelly and junior OF Katie Dean, who both singled to lead off the inning.
Strickland added another three-run homer of her own in the sixth inning to push the Rams? lead to six, scoring junior OF Jennifer Gardner and Dean. Dean?s two runs in the game tied season- and career-highs. The home run was Strickland?s third of the season.
The Aztecs added one run in the sixth and seventh innings, to cut the score to 6-2.
Kelly improved to 10-4 on the season with the complete-game victory, striking out six batters and allowing only two runs on five hits.
Next up the Rams will host UNLV on Sunday afternoon at Ram Field. The Rebels split with New Mexico on Friday afternoon and come to Fort Collins with a record of 24-13 (1-1 MWC). Game one of the double header is slated to begin at 12 noon.
