Utah State Home Runs Put Rams Away

The Colorado State University softball team dropped one game Thursday afternoon in non-conference action to the Utah State Aggies in Logan, Utah. The Rams (25-14, 4-2 MWC) and Aggies (12-23) were tied heading into the final frame, but a Utah State walk-off homer run handed the Rams a 2-1 defeat. The Rams out-hit Utah State by a 12-4 margin, but stranded 13 baserunners on the afternoon and managed only one run.
Utah State took an early lead in the second inning on a solo home run freshman Heather Haak. The Rams quickly responded with the team?s only run in the top of the third inning. Senior Stephanie Roberts singled up the middle and advanced to second a sacrifice bunt by junior Jennifer Gardner, her team leading ninth sacrifice bunt of the season. Roberts moved to third base on a ground out by sophomore Jessica Strickland, and scored on a single up the middle by senior Kerry Farrell.
The game remained tied at one until the seventh inning when the Rams threatened, but stranded three runners on base for the second time in the game. In the Aggies half of the seventh junior Amanda Carver knocked a home run to left center to end the game.
Four different Rams recorded multiple hit games, including a 4-for-4, one RBI performance from Farrell. Roberts, sophomore Brittany Huerta and junior Katie Dean each finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate.
Junior Genevieve Kelly (11-6) picked up the loss in relief of junior JayCee Wood. Wood pitched the first five innings of the game allowing only one run on two hits and striking out one batter. Kelly allowed only two hits as well in one inning pitched, but gave up the winning home run.
Next up, the Rams will face conference-leading BYU in a doubleheader in Provo, Utah. The Rams currently sit one game behind the Cougars in the conference standings.
