Rams? Rallies Fall Short At BYU

The Colorado State Softball team (25-16, 4-4 MWC) dropped two games against the conference-leading BYU Cougars on Friday night in Provo, Utah. The Rams lost both games by only one run, 6-5 in game one and 4-3 in game two.
In game one, the Rams? offense struck first, putting up three runs in the top of the second inning to give the Rams an early lead. Sophomore Brittany Huerta continued to swing a hot bat, leading off the inning with a single down the right field line and scoring on a double by freshman Julia Kloppe. Freshman Lauren Cusick walked, and Kloppe and Cusick each advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Genevieve Kelly. After a walk to senior Stephanie Roberts, junior Jennifer Gardner doubled down the left field line to score Kloppe and Cusick and give the Rams a 3-0 advantage.
The Rams staked to a 4-0 lead after the fifth inning when Roberts led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Gardner. Roberts, who finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate, then scored on an single by sophomore Jessica Strickland.
However, the Cougars used three-run innings in the fifth and sixth to take a two-run lead. Two BYU errors in the top of the seventh allowed junior Katie Dean to score and bring the Rams to within one run with two outs. However, the Rams were unable to tie the game, as Huerta grounded out to end the contest.
Kelly (11-7) picked up the loss in relief of Strickland. Kelly allowed three runs on four hits, striking out three in just 1.2 innings of work. Strickland, held the Cougars scoreless through four innings, but was taken out of the game in the middle of the fifth inning. She finished allowing three runs on six hits and striking out three batters in 4.1 innings.
In game two, it was BYU who jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning. Cusick responded with her second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning to cut the BYU lead to just one.
The Cougars added another run in the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead, and after a scoreless sixth inning, the Rams came up to bat, down two runs in the final frame. Once again, a BYU error in the seventh inning allowed Strickland to reach base with one out. A two-out single by Huerta scored Strickland from third base and cut the lead to 4-3. Kloppe moved Huerta to second with a single to right field, bringing up Cusick, who homered earlier in the game and finished 3-for-4. Cusick, however, could not produce the same results and a pop-foul to third ended the game.
Kelly fell to 11-8 on the season, with the complete-game loss. She allowed four runs on six hits and struck out seven BYU batters in six innings. With ten total strikeouts on the day, Kelly moved into fourth place on the CSU career strikeout charts, surpassing Kyla Kiester, who struck out 201 batters from 1998 to 2001 and Tammy Taylor, who fanned 205 batters from 1984 through 1987.
The Rams will look to end their three-game slide on Saturday afternoon against the University of Utah. The Utes are currently 13-20 overall and 1-5 in the Mountain West play.
