Rams Complete Season Sweep Of Lobos

The Colorado State softball team completed the season sweep of the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday afternoon in Albuquerque, N.M. The Rams shutout the Lobos 5-0 in game one, and won game two by a 5-2 decision to improve to 29-16 overall and 8-4 in Mountain West Conference play. The win was the Rams? fourth straight road conference win.
In game one the Rams notched two runs in the third and three runs in the fourth to pick up the victory as sophomore Jessica Strickland recorded her team-leading third shutout of the season, and second in conference play. Strickland improved to 11-7 on the season, scattering six hits and striking out two Lobos in the complete-game effort. She also matched her career-high win total, set as a freshman in 2004.
Senior Stephanie Roberts, who finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, got the Rams offense started in the third inning with a one-out double to right center. After a walk by freshman Lauren Cusick, Strickland singled down the left field line to load the bases and a single to left field by sophomore Brittany Huerta scored Roberts and Cusick.
New Mexico errors in the fourth helped the Rams to put the game away. With one out, junior Jennifer Gardner reached on an error by the shortstop, and advanced to second on a single by junior Katie Dean. Roberts then singled in Gardner to give the Rams a three-run advantage. With two outs, Strickland reached on an error by the New Mexico right fielder which allowed Dean and Roberts to score and put the game out of reach.
In game two, the Rams jumped on the scoreboard early with one run in the first inning. Roberts doubled to left center to lead off the game, and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Cusick . Strickland scored Roberts on a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give the Rams an early advantage.
A two-run home run by Cusick put the Rams ahead 3-0 and would prove to be all the run support that the Rams? pitchers would need. New Mexico added one run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 3-1, but the Rams added two insurance runs in the sixth inning.
Strickland led off the inning with a single to center and scored on a wild pitch, before freshman Julia Kloppe doubled in Huerta to score the Rams? fifth run of the game. The Lobos added the team?s second run of the game in the bottom half of the sixth, but could not get any closer.
Genevieve Kelly improved to 14-7 on the season with the win. Kelly pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out four batters. Strickland picked up her second save of the season, pitching 1.1 innings and striking out one batter. She is now just one save shy of tying Megan Masser?s (2001-04) career record at CSU with 10.
With hits in both games, Huerta improved her current hitting streak to nine games, and has now hit safely in 22 of her last 23 games.
Next up, the Rams will return to Fort Collins to close out their home schedule with two conference doubleheaders against Utah and conference-leading BYU on April 29 and 30, respectively, both beginning at 1 p.m. MT at Ram Field.
