Rams Fall To Rebels

The Colorado State softball team (23-13, 2-2 MWC) dropped two games to the UNLV Rebels (26-13, 3-1 MWC) at Ram Field on Sunday afternoon. In game one, the Rams fell 3-2 in extra innings after a seventh inning rally to tie the game, and then lost 10-0 in five innings in game two.
In the first game, UNLV took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run double.
The score remained 2-0 until the Rams? rallied in bottom of the seventh inning. Senior SS Brittany Burtner started things off for the Rams reaching third on an error by the UNLV right fielder. Freshman 3B Lauren Cusick scored Burtner from third with a sacrifice fly to left field. Senior 2B Stephanie Roberts connected for a two-out single to third base, and scored on an error by the UNLV center fielder on a ball off the bat of junior OF Jennifer Gardner, to send the game into extra innings knotted at two.
The Rebels led off the eighth with a single, and the runner advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Another UNLV single put runners on second and third with one out, and an error by Lauren Cusick allowed the winning run to cross the plate.
The Rams went down in order in the bottom of the eighth to end the game 3-2.
Sophomore P Jessica Strickland ( 9-6) picked up the loss, giving up seven hits, two earned runs and striking out four Rebels in eight innings.
In game two, the Rams and Rebels played to a scoreless tie for the first two innings, but UNLV scored four runs in both the third and fourth innings, and added two more in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach at 10-0.
Senior C Kerry Farrell and Cusick notched the only two hits for the Rams in the game, as Colorado State was held scoreless in conference play for the first time since March 28, 2003, a 1-0 loss to UNLV in Las Vegas.
Junior P Genevieve Kelly dropped to 10-5 with the loss. She gave up four runs on four hits, walked three and struck out two batters in 2.1 innings. Junior JayCee Wood pitched 2.2 innings in relief and allowed six runs on six hits and gave up two walks while striking out one.
Roberts tied the career record for walks at Colorado State with her 77th career walk in game two, tying Holly Schmillen (1998-2001).
Next up, the Rams will host New Mexico on Saturday, April 9 at Ram Field. Game one of the double header is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
