Softball Stays Alive With Win Over Utah

The Colorado State softball team staved off elimination with a come-from-behind victory over the No. 4 ranked Utah Utes in its second-round match-up at the Mountain West Conference Tournament in San Diego, Calif., on Friday afternoon. The win improves the Rams? record to 30-21 on the season, the Rams? third-straight 30 win season.
Colorado State fell behind early as the Utes put one run on the board in both the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. The score remained that way until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Rams? offense came to life to score three runs and take the lead.
Freshman Lauren Cusick tripled with one out to score junior Rachelle Padeway and sophomore Jessica Strickland and tie the game at two. Freshman Julia Kloppe then singled to left field to score Cusick and give the Rams the lead.
Cusick finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored and Kloppe hit 1-for-3 with the game-winning RBI.
Strickland improved her record to 12-9 on the season with the win in relief of Genevieve Kelly. Strickland pitched the final five innings of the game allowing only two hits and striking out one batter. Kelly pitched two innings in the no decision and gave up two runs on four hits, walking three and striking out one batter.
Next up, the Rams will face No. 2 ranked UNLV tonight at 7 p.m. PT with the winner facing either No. 1 BYU or No. 5 New Mexico, who play at 4:30 p.m. PT.
