Softball Drops Two To Aztecs

The Colorado State softball team fell to 29-20 (8-8 MWC) with a pair of losses to the San Diego State Aztecs on Sunday afternoon in San Diego, Calif. The doubleheader, which was televised on CSTV, was also the Rams regular-season finale. The Aztecs edged out the Rams 1-0 in game one, followed by a 7-5 finish in game two.
In game one, the Rams? bats were unable to capitalize on situations with two-runners on in the first and third innings, and were shut out for the second time in three games.
Senior Stephanie Roberts was hit by a pitch for the seventh time this season to lead off the game. Junior Jessica Strickland advanced Roberts to second with a one-out single to left field, before senior Kerry Farrell fouled out to the shortstop and sophomore Brittany Huerta grounded into a fielder?s choice to end the inning.
In the third inning, junior Katie Dean led off the third with a single to third base. After a walk by Roberts, the Rams were threatening with two runners on and no outs. Junior Jennifer Gardner popped up to first base and Strickland flied out to left field. Farrell then grounded out to third base the end the Rams? threat.
The Aztecs? only run came in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI double to the right field wall by Meagan Hartung.
Strickland moved to 11-8 on the season with the complete game loss. She allowed only one run on six hits, while giving two walks and striking out one Aztec batter.
In game two, the Rams struck first with one run in the top of the second inning. Huerta led off the inning with a single to third base and advanced to second on a two-out walk by Farrell before junior Jennifer Gardner slapped a single down the left field line to score Huerta and give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
But the Aztecs bats came to life with four runs in the second inning and three runs in the third, aided by three uncharacteristic errors by the Rams, to take a 7-1 lead into the fourth inning.
The Rams cut the Aztec lead to 7-5 in the sixth inning. Freshman Lauren Cusick led off the inning with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a single by freshman Julia Kloppe. Cusick scored on a single to shortstop by Gardner. Junior Melanie Laffoon capped the Rams? scoring with a pinch-hit three-run home run to left. However, the Rams were held scoreless in the sixth inning and the game ended in a 7-5 final score.
JayCee Wood got the loss for the Rams in game two, falling to 3-4 on the season. She allowed four runs on five hits in 1.1 innings. Genevieve Kelly pitched 1 inning in relief of Wood and gave up three runs on three hits while walking two batters. Strickland closed out the game for the Rams pitching an additional 3.2 innings and striking out 3 batters.
The Rams will remain in San Diego for the rest of the week to prepare for the Mountain West Conference Tournament which begins on Thursday, May 12 and runs through Friday, May 14 at SDSU Stadium in San Diego, Calif. Colorado State earned the third seed in the tournament and will face host San Diego State on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Pacific.
