Rams Fall In Conference Doubleheader With Utah

The Colorado State University softball team (25-23, 5-13 MWC) dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Utah Utes (31-15, 10-4 MWC) on Saturday afternoon in Salt Lake City. The Rams fell 7-3 in game one and 11-6 in game two.
In the first game, the Utes posted three runs in the first inning before the Rams added two in the top of the third inning on a two-run single by sophomore Julia Kloppe. Utah scored four runs in the following three innings and held the Rams to just one to take the game 7-3.
Junior Jessica Strickland went 3-for-4 from the plate with one run and one RBI in the contest. Freshman Renee Welty posted a 1-for-1 performance, adding a run for the Rams in the seventh inning.
Junior Jessica Strickland picked up the loss for the Rams, falliing to 10-15 on the season. She pitched the first 4.1 innings, allowing six runs on eleven hits. Freshman Kim Klabough pitched 1.2 innings in relief of Strickland, allowing one run on four hits.
In the second game, Utah jumped to a 5-0 lead before the Rams posted six runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-5 advantage. The Utes' offense responded, adding six additional runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the scoring with an 11-6 advantage.
Senior Katie Dean led the Rams, going 2-for-2 from the plate followed by fellow senior Jennifer Gardner with a 2-for-3 performance. Each had one run and one RBI.
Freshman Kim Klabough pitched the first 3.1 innings for the Rams before getting relief from Strickland in the fourth inning. Klabough allowed five runs on eleven hits and struck out three batters. Strickland pitched 1.1 innings and allowed six runs on six hits to pick up the loss and fall to 10-16. Freshman MaryBeth Culp closed the game, pitching the last 1.1 innings, allowing no runs on one hit.
The Rams will return home for their final regular-season contest when they host the New Mexico Lobos in a conference doubleheader on May 6. The first game is set to begin at 12 p.m. MT.
