Rams Take Game Two From Cougars, 9-3

The Colorado State University softball team (25-21, 5-11 MWC) picked up a big conference victory late Friday night, defeating the BYU Cougars, 9-3, in Provo, Utah, behind a four-RBI performance by sophomore Lauren Cusick.
The Rams' offense tallied seven runs in the first two innings of the game, and the defense held strong behind freshman P Kim Klabough.
The Rams got on the board in the first inning, with three-straight singles by Tara Harbert, Jessica Strickland and Cusick, who tallied two RBI to plate Harbert and Strickland. Cusick advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Julia Kloppe, and scored one batter later on a two-run homer by junior Stacey Leigh to give the Rams a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
The Rams put the game away in the second inning with three more runs. Seniors Jennifer Gardner, Rachelle Padeway and Tara Harbert loaded the bases with three straight singles. Strickland grounded out to second base to score Gardner and Cusick notched two more RBI with a single to center field to score Harbert and Padeway.
BYU threatened with one run in the fourth and two runs in the sixth inning, but the Rams responded with runs in the sixth and the seventh.
Kloppe laid down her second sacrifice bunt the game to bring home Harbert for the third time, in the sixth inning. Harbert then came through for the Rams in the seventh inning with a RBI single to score junior Brittany Huerta and give the Rams the 9-3 victory.
Klabough improved to 14-6 on the season with the complete-game victory. She allowed just three runs on three hits and struck out five.
Next up, the Rams will square off against the Utah Utes in Salt Lake City, beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
