Rams Split Final Regular-Season Doubleheader with New Mexico

The Colorado State University softball team (26-24, 6-14 MWC) split the final regular-season conference doubleheader with the New Mexico Lobos (23-29, 4-16 MWC) on Saturday afternoon at Ram Field. The Rams fell 3-2 in game one but came back to win 6-1 in the second.
In the first game, New Mexico started the scoring in the top of the fourth inning with a single run from senior Cassie Chavez. The Rams responded, getting a home run from sophomore Julia Kloppe in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at one. The Rams scored again in the bottom of the fifth when senior Rachelle Padeway singled to center field to score senior Jennifer Gardner and give the Rams their only lead of the game. The Lobos answered, posting runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take the game 3-2.
Sophomore Julia Kloppe led the Rams, going 2-for-3 from the plate with one run and one RBI. Senior Rachelle Padeway also posted a 2-for-3 performance with one RBI.
Freshman Kim Klabough picked up the loss for the Rams, falliing to 14-7 on the season. She pitched the complete game, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out two batters.
In the second game, the Rams jumped to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Seniors Tara Harbert and Jennifer Gardner led off with singles before junior Jessica Strickland hit her twelfth home run of the season to put the Rams up 3-0. Sophomore Lauren Cusick scored the final run of the inning to give the Rams a 4-0 advantage.
The Rams added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning when freshman Jenna Wisely scored on a single by Harbert. The Lobos got their only run in the fifth from freshman Heather Carter before Colorado State added a final run in the sixth inning from Harbert to end the game 6-1.
Harbert led the Rams with a 4-for-4 performance with two runs and one RBI. Gardner went 3-for-4 from the plate with one run and one RBI.
Strickland picked up the complete game victory for the Rams to improve to 11-17 on the season. She allowed one run on three hits while striking out six batters, tying her season high.
The Rams travel to Las Vegas, Nev. May 11-13 for the Mountain West Conference Tournament.
