Provo, Utah - The Colorado State women's tennis team completed its first day of competition in the 2006-07 season with a singles record of 7-6 in the BYU Invitational Thursday. The Rams had three players advance to the quarterfinals of the singles draw today as well.

In the open bracket, sophomore Lauren Strasburger and senior Emily Kirchem each advanced to the quarterfinal round going undefeated in the first day of play. Strasburger earned a win over Weber State's Ashley Shapper, 6-2, 6-3 before downing eighth-seed Emily Kwok of Utah, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. She will face top-seeded Eka Burduli of Washington State on Friday in the quaterfinals.

After advancing to the second round via a bye, Kirchem then defeated Branca Jochimsen of Boise State, 6-3, 6-0 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals versus fifth-seeded Anastasia Surkova of BYU on Friday.

Rounding out CSU's players in the open bracket was junior Hilary Tyler who won over Utah State's Dee Dee Nelson, 6-4, 6-1 before withdrawing due to injury against No. 6 Amy Toth of Washington State. CSU freshman Laura Neal fell twice on the day to Washington State's Marjokela Van de Ven and BYU's Dolly Chang.

In the A bracket, Ram frosh Kirsten Stople advanced to quarterfinal play with wins over Nicole Clark of Weber State, 6-2, 6-1 and Weber State's Keya Adamson, 6-3, 7-6.

Sophomore Greer Satherlie went 1-1 on the day with a win over McCaye Badger of Utah and a loss to Rana El Derwy of BYU while Sarah Seltsam lost twice in the tournament.

"I'm really pleased with the overall competitiveness of our team, especially our new players", commented CSU's head coach Jon Messick. "Having two players in the top flight advance to the quarterfinals is excellent for us. Kirsten (Stople) winning her first two collegiate matches is outstanding as well. Everyone has played good tennis for us."

Doubles play in the tournament was delayed due to rainy conditions in the Provo area and will be completed late Thursday before singles and doubles play resumes on Friday morning. The tournament concluded on Saturday with the championship rounds.
