In the open bracket, Emily Kirchem picked up her second win of the tournament, defeating Anastasia Surkova of BYU, 4-1, 6-1, 6-0. In semifinal competition, Kirchem fell to top-seeded Eka Burduli of Washington State, 7-5, 6-2.
Emily Kirchem also advanced to the open doubles semifinals with teammate Laura Neal. The pair was defeated by the number one seeded team in the bracket, Anastasia Surkova and Jenny Miccoli of BYU, 8-2.
"Emily (Kirchem) played the best tennis I've ever seen her play at CSU," commented head coach Jon Messick. "She can compete with the top players in the region and in the nation."
Also in the open bracket, Lauren Strasburger ended her undefeated streak with a loss to Eka Burduli, 6-3, 6-0, in quarterfinal play.
Competing in the A bracket, Kirsten Stople fell to Chie Hayasaka of BYU in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-2. Hayasaka was the top seed in the singles A bracket.
"This first tournament showed that we have a team that will be extremely competitive," head coach Jon Messick commented. "I am very pleased with the results."
While a second day of rainy conditions forced several matches inside, singles and doubles finals in each bracket will be completed Saturday.
