The Colorado State softball team (16-11) pushed its winning streak to four games with a double header sweep of the University of Iowa on Tuesday afternoon in Sacramento, Calif.
"It was good to get a sweep against a quality opponent like Iowa," said head coach Mary Yori. "We were able to stay in it defensively even though our offense struggled early. We are playing really softball right now and getting contributions from a lot of different places."
The Rams defeated the Hawkeyes 1-0 in nine innings in the first game, followed by a 5-4 game-two decision.
In game one, the Rams struggled offensively, but sophomore pitcher Kim Klabough was able to hold the Iowa offense scoreless en route to the complete game victory. The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie through nine innings before sophomore catcher Shannon Causgrove knocked a two-out walk-off home run to give the Rams the victory.
In game two, Iowa was able to jump out to an early 2-0 lead, but CSU freshman Ashley Munoz gave the Rams the lead with a three-run homer, and after an RBI single by Rebecca Penland, the Rams held a 4-2 advantage through five innings. An RBI triple by senior Brittany Huerta gave the Rams a 5-2 advantage in the sixth inning.
Iowa cut the Rams' lead to 5-4 with a runs in the sixth and seventh innings but they were unable to overtake Colorado State.
Senior Jessica Strickland picked up the victory for the Rams in game two.
Next up, the Rams return to action on Thursday with a double header against Iowa State before competing in the Capital Classica softball tournament hosted by Sacramento State.
