CSU Tennis Wins Second Straight
Hilton Head, S.C.-The Colorado State women's tennis team swept the Dayton Flyers in their second game of the spring break trip, winning 7-0.
In doubles play, the Rams took all three matches and earned one point toward their team score. At No. 1 doubles, Kirchem/Tyler continued their undefeated streak at the position, with their victory over Detroy/Mellion, 8-4; the pair is now 5-0 on the season. At No. 2, Neal/Strasburger defeated Dzubay/Hoops, 8-1, and returned to .500 in dual play, with a current record of 3-3. At No. 3 doubles, Pohjalainen/Stople beat Gray/Ernst, 8-0, and are also undefeated for 2007; they hold a 4-0 record at the No. 3 doubles position.
In singles, the Rams swept the Flyers and took all six team points. At No. 1, Emily Kirchem earned a victory over Kate Mellion, 6-0, 6-0, for her second win of the season. At No. 2 singles, Lauren Strasburger defeated Alyssa Detroy, 6-3, 6-1, and moved to 4-2 in dual play. At No. 3, Laura Neal beat Megan Gray, 6-3, 6-2, and improved to 5-2. At the No. 4 position, Hilary Tyler won over Nicole Dzubay, 6-0, 6-0 for her fourth win of 2007. At No. 5, Anette Pohjalainen advanced to 6-1 with her victory over Mackenzie Hoops, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 6 doubles, Riu Xu picked up her first singles win of the season after defeating Maggie Ernst, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.
"We were able to do things in these matches that will help in conference," head coach Jon Messick said. "We worked on our weaknesses and got our games rounded out."
The Rams return to the court tomorrow at noon, when they face the Bucknell Bison in their final match of the spring break trip.
