The Colorado State softball team won the first game of the Fresno State Bulldog Classic, beating Toledo 7-2. "We are off to a positive start in a competitive tournament and the win will give us momentum for tomorrow," added head coach Mary Yori.
The Rams took a 3-0 lead in the third with a two-run homer from senior Brittany Huerta and didn't score again until the bottom of the sixth. The Rockets posted runs in the fourth and fifth innings before Colorado State answered, adding four to give them a 7-2 victory.
Senior Jessica Strickland started the game and pitched 4.0 innings and gave up one run on six hits and had two strikeouts. Freshman Rebecca Penland entered the game in relief to pitch the last 3.0 innings. She gave up one run on two hits and struck out four batters. Strickland picked up the win, evening her record at 3-3 and Penland picked up her first collegiate save. "Becca (Penland) was very courageous today and showed a lot of poise and I am very proud of her. She gave up a home run on the first at bat, but settled in and gave great effort," noted Yori.
Colorado State will continue play in the Fresno State Bulldog Classic tomorrow, facing off against Penn State at 5:30 p.m. MT and host Fresno State at 8 p.m. MT.
