Rebels Rally in Seventh, Beat Rams

The Colorado State Rams lost the first game of the home series against the UNLV Rebels today. The Rebels battled back in the top of the seventh inning to win 11-5. The Rams are now 23-19 on the season and 2-1 in Mountain West Conference play.
Colorado State started the game strong with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Lauren Cusick walked to start the game and advanced to second on the sacrifice bunt by senior Brittany Huerta. Cusick scored when senior Jessica Strickland singled up the middle. With bases loaded, junior Julia Kloppe hit a single to left center to score freshman Allison Majam. The Rams added to that lead in the bottom of the second when sophomore Kim Klabough hit a solo home run to left center, her first home run of the season.
The Rams kept the lead until the top of the fifth when Sandy Nakamura singled up the middle to score Kelli Fangonilo. The Rams regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 5-4. Senior Stacey Leigh doubled down the right field line to score Strickland from second and Majam from first.
In the top of the seventh inning, two Ram errors and seven hits by the Rebels helped UNLV rally with seven runs. The Rams were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to end the game.
Senior Jessica Strickland started the game for the Rams and pitched 6.2 innings. She gave up six hits while striking out two. Freshman Rebecca Penland relieved Strickland in the top of the seventh and gave up three hits and struck out one batter.
The Rams face UNLV tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Ram Field.
