Despite home runs by freshmen Allison Majam and Ashley Munoz, the Colorado State softball team fell to the Utah Utes on Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City. The loss drops the Rams to 23-23 (2-5 MWC) on the season, while the Utes improve to 21-19 (2-7 MWC). The two homers by Munoz and Majam now give the Rams 58 on the season, tying the school record held by the 2004 squad.
Colorado State was held to just one hit in the first three innings of the contest, and Utah took a 4-0 lead before the Rams got on the board in the top of the fourth. Home runs gave the Utes and early advantage. Utah's Dana Phillips led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run down the left field line. Then with two outs in the bottom of the third, Phillips singled through the right side and stole second before Hailey Davenport homered to left field to put the Utes ahead by four runs.
The Rams answered in the fourth inning. Senior Jessica Strickland led off the inning with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Senior Stacey Leigh came through with a two-out single to left center to score Strickland.
Utah answered with two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take an 8-1 lead. Colorado State's rally in the top of the sixth was stopped after just three runs. With tow outs, Strickland drew a walk and Majam and Munoz recorded back-to-back home runs to cut the lead to 8-4.
Majam and Munoz were each 1-for-3 from the plate with a run scored. Majam recorded two RBI and Munoz added one. Strickland added two runs, on 1-for-2 hitting, with one walk. Stacey Leigh was 2-for-3 with one RBI for the Rams.
Strickland picked up the loss for the Rams, allowing four earned runs on six hits and striking out two batters. Freshman Rebecca Penland pitched two innings in relief of Strickland, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out three.
The Rams will conclude their Utah road swing tomorrow afternoon in game two against the Utes. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. MT.
