CSU Softball Falls in Extra Innings

The Colorado State softball team (26-25, 5-7 MWC) fell to the San Diego State Aztecs, 3-2 in eight innings on Sunday Afternoon in San Diego, Calif.
The Rams got on the board in the first inning when junior Lauren Cusick led off the game, reaching and advancing to second on two errors by San Diego State third baseman, Christine Kulik. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Senior Jessica Strickland, and scored on a wild pitch.
The Aztecs answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. After back-to-back singles and a hit batter to begin the game, the Aztecs notched two more base hits to take a 2-1 lead after the first inning.
Sophomore pitcher Kim Klabough's solo home run in the top of the second inning tied the contest, 2-2. Klabough scattered six hits over the next six innings, sending the game to extra innings.
The Rams threatened in the top of the eighth inning. Freshman Melissa Routh led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cusick. Strickland then singled to left field to advance Routh to third base with one out. However, following a pitching change for the Aztecs, freshmen Allison Majam and Ashley Munoz were retired to end the inning with runners on first and second.
SDSU's Kasey Mytinger led off the eighth with a pinch-hit single. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Christina Hollingshead. Mytinger scored one batter later on a walk-off double by Kulik to defeat the Rams, 3-2.
Klagough pitched 7.1 innings for the Rams, allowing three runs on 12 hits and striking out two batters.
The Rams will now return home to Fort Collins to take on Utah and BYU next week at Ram Field. The Rams play two against the Utes on Thursday beginning at 1:30 p.m. They will then face the BYU Cougars on Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 12 p.m.
