Final Stats

The Colorado State Softball team (28-28, 7-10 MWC) split two games of a doubleheader against the New Mexico Lobos (20-22, 9-8 MWC) on Friday night in Albuquerque, N.M. The Rams lost game one, 10-8, but bounced back for a 9-8 victory in game two.

After falling behind by a score of 10-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Rams mounted a comeback, but fell just short, scoring seven runs in the game's final two innings.

Colorado State was held scoreless through the first four innings of game one, before senior Brittany Huerta scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman Allison Majam. However, five New Mexico runs in the top of the sixth inning pushed CSU's deficit to 10-1 in the bottom of the sixth.

Senior Jessica Strickland blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, and an RBI-single by Lauren Cusick scored Huerta to cut the Lobos' lead to 10-5. Freshman Ashley Munoz led off the seventh inning with a double and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by junior Julia Kloppe. Huerta singled in Strickland with two outs. With the bases loaded, Cusick singled to first base to drive in the Rams' eighth run, scoring freshman Melissa Routh. Majam flied out to left field to end the Rams' comeback bid and the game, 10-8.

Cusick led the Rams, going 3-for-4 from the plate with two RBI. Huerta was 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI, while Strickland finished 1-for-4 with a run and three RBI. She also picked up the loss for the Rams, allowing four runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work. Freshman Rebecca Penland pitched 2.2 innings in relief of Strickland and allowed six runs on seven hits.

In game two, the Lobos used four pitchers, as the Rams bats awakened, once again, scoring seven combined runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, to earn the 9-8 victory.

The Lobos led 5-2 through three innings. Cusick put the Rams on the board with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Majam scored the Rams' second run of the opening inning on a sacrifice fly from Munoz.

Following a four-run outburst by the Lobos in the second inning, New Mexico scored one run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but it was not enough to keep pace with the Rams.

Huerta started a three-run fourth inning for the Rams, crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Majam. Senior Stacey Leigh hit a two-out single to score freshmen Adriana Lira and Robyn Mask to cut the lead to 6-5.

In the fifth inning, Huerta tripled to score Strickland with one out and Lira singled to score Huerta with two outs, tying the game, 7-7. New Mexico took an 8-7 lead in the top of the sixth.

The Rams grabbed the victory on a two-out pinch hit single to plate freshman Jessica Harrison and Strickland.

Klabough went the distance for the Rams, pitching 7.0 innings and allowing four earned runs on five hits, while striking out six batters.

Nine different players recorded one hit in game two for the Rams. Huerta and Strickland each scored twice, while Causgrove and Leigh each recorded two RBI.

Next up, the Rams face the Lobos once again, closing out the season with a twin bill beginning tomorrow at 12 p.m. MT.
