LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Colorado State softball team extended its win streak to five games Saturday after beating New Mexico State, 9-6, on the second day of the Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces Classic. The Rams are now 3-0 in the tournament and 7-1 overall.

Colorado State jumped on the Aggies in the top of the first inning when sophomore Ashley Munoz doubled to score freshman Caitlan Stem from first. The Rams added to that lead in the top of the third after sophomore Allison Majam doubled to score senior Lauren Cusick, who singled and stole second earlier in the inning.

New Mexico State tied it up in the bottom half of the inning when Ashley Maroda doubled to score both Kandis Jones from third and Kristi Randall from second.

Colorado State regained the lead in the fifth and pulled away in the top of the sixth, adding four runs to its 3-2 lead. With two outs, freshman Eranne Daugharthy singled to left field to score freshman Ivory Allen. Daugharthy then scored on an error by the New Mexico State second baseman. Cusick and sophomore Sarah Sullivan would also score in the inning on a double to left field by Stem.

The Aggies added one run in the bottom of the sixth, but Colorado State added two more in the top of the seventh. Senior Cayte Billman homered with no outs and Majam at first to give the Rams a 9-3 lead.

New Mexico State added three in the bottom of the seventh, but Billman, who came in to relieve sophomore pitcher Rebecca Penland, got the final two outs of the game to give the Rams a 9-6 victory.

"It's nice to score enough runs to distance ourselves late in the game," Head Coach Mary Yori said after the win, "Our offense is really hitting the ball well and defensively we played very well again."

Cusick and Munoz were both 2-for-4 on the day. Cusick also scored three runs and Munoz had two RBI. Penland started the game for the Rams in the circle, pitching 6.2 innings and striking out two.

The Rams finish the Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces Classic tomorrow when they face University of Illinois-Chicago at 9 a.m. and North Dakota State at 11:30 a.m.
