HONOLULU, Hawaii - Senior third baseman Lauren Cusick went 2-for-4 from the plate and homered for the 11th time this season, and third time in as many games, but the Rams fell to host Hawaii, 8-1, at the Bank of Hawaii Invitational late Thursday night.
Hawaii put up one run in the top of the second inning, and in the top of the third a three-run homer by freshman Melissa Gonzalez, who went 3-for-4 from the plate, contributed to a four-run inning that put the Rams into an early 5-0 hole.
The Rainbow Wahine added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning, to put the Rams away by an 8-1 final.
Cusick solo shot came with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Junior pitcher Kim Klabough fell to 5-7 on the season with the loss. Klabough allowed five runs, one earned, and struck out two batters in 3.1 innings of work. Sophomore Rebecca Penland gave up three runs, one earned, and fanned four batters in 2.2 innings of relief work. Freshman Eranne Daugharthy recorded the final three outs for the Rams, giving up just one hit, while striking out one batter.
