SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Colorado State women's tennis team continued conference play Saturday facing No. 51 UNLV. Facing their sixth consecutive ranked opponent, the Rams fell 7-0 at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The Rams (6-9, 0-5 MWC) are currently on a six-match losing streak. The squad has dropped all six matches to ranked opponents, including five conference foes. UNLV advances to 12-8 on the year.
In doubles, Lauren Strasburger and Hilary Tyler competed against a ranked doubles duo for just the second time this season (No. 42 Reimers/Albers of Nebraska). Facing No. 48 Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva, the duo was unable to capture a win, and still holds five spring victories.
The Rams' leader in doubles wins, Sarah Seltsam and Kirsten Stople, was unable to pick up a win at the No. 3 spot, falling 8-2.
In singles, the Rams continued to face a tough Rebels team.
"UNLV outplayed us," commented Head Coach Jon Messick. "They came out strong and didn't let go. They did a good job closing us out."
Tyler matched up against her fifth consecutive ranked opponent at the No. 1 spot. However, down 5-0 in the first set, she was forced to retire with a wrist injury. Her status is listed as day-to-day, according to Messick.
After snapping a four-match losing streak last Saturday, Laura Neal took her match to three sets. Dropping her first, then coming back to win her second set, Neal was unable to hold on, as she fell at the No. 2 spot.
Greer Satherlie also fought hard, taking her No. 6 singles match to three sets. While she earned a decisive 6-2 win in her first set, she ultimately lost her match. Satherlie remains the second winningest Ram in singles play, with 14 victories.
The Rams continue their trip to San Diego Sunday as they take on San Diego State at 11 a.m. MDT.
"I think we match up well with San Diego State," commented Messick. "Our attitude is positive and we think we've got a good shot at every match tomorrow."
