SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Colorado State (25-24, 6-7 MWC) split its doubleheader on Thursday at Utah (21-30, 3-9 MWC), losing the first game 12-3, but rebounding in the second game to take the 5-3 victory.
The first game of the doubleheader was a makeup game from April 4, a game that was scheduled to be played in Fort Collins, but inclement weather forced the game to be rescheduled as Game 1 of a doubleheader at Utah.
Utah’s offense controlled Game 1, scoring 12 runs on 15 hits. The Utes scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Rams answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs on back-to-back doubles from freshman Christine Thomsen and junior Allison Majam. Thomsen’s double plated freshman Jenna Krogh, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning, and Majam’s double plated Thomsen.
Utah took the lead once again in the top of the second, but Colorado State cut the Ute lead to 5-3 in the bottom half of the inning when senior Shannon Causgrove led off the inning with a solo shot to left center.
Utah added two runs in the top of the fourth inning and another run in the fifth to take an 8-3 lead. The Utes added four more runs in the top of the seventh to give them a 12-3 advantage.
Colorado State recorded a single in the bottom of the seventh, but Utah held on for the 12-3 victory.
Freshman Dani Chaplin started in the circle for the Rams, recording one inning before being relieved by fellow freshman Kelli Eubanks. Eubanks tossed 5.1 innings in the circle before being replaced by senior Kim Klabough for the final two outs.
Game 2 was a pitchers’ duel until the fourth inning, when Colorado State put three runs on the board. Junior Rebecca Penland gave the Rams two runs when she doubled to right center to plate sophomore Caitlan Stem and Thomsen. Stem singled to lead off the inning and Thomsen reached on an error by the Utah center fielder. Junior Ashley Munoz gave Colorado State another run when she singled to plate Penland.
Utah tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth, but Colorado State added a run in the sixth inning when Causgrove homered for the second time to give the Rams a 4-3 lead. Colorado State added another run in the seventh inning to grab a 5-3 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Chaplin, who received the start in the circle for the Rams, recorded the final three outs to secure the 5-3 win and grab her seventh win of the season. She tossed a complete game, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out five Utah batters.
