Tennis Recap: Rams fall to Pioneers in dual season opener

DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado State tennis team lost its dual season opener to Denver late Friday night, 5-2, at the Colorado Athletic Club.
The Pioneers (1-0) swept the Rams (0-1) in all three doubles matches to begin competition, earning the first point of the night. However, with another strong performance by sophomore Lauren Mulhern, CSU tied the match at one when Mulhern defeated Anna-Betty Kadar, 6-3, 6-3, in the first singles match of competition.
Playing at the No. 5 position, junior Melissa Holzinger fell to DU’s Lorinda Boothman, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, giving Denver a 2-1 advantage, but sophomore Veronika Wojakowska’s win over Emma Isberg, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 4 position once again tied the match.
Denver capitalized in the next three singles matches, earning a 5-2 win over CSU.
"We struggled all night, but the match came down to the last two matches on the court which we were able to extend to three sets,” Head Coach Jon Messick said. “We had a chance at the victory until the very end, but came up just a bit short. We played a nationally ranked team extremely close in our first match of the season. We are encouraged that with improvement we will be able to compete well against the ranked teams in our conference."
After a week of practice, the Rams return home Saturday for their first home match of the season, against Portland State. The 5 p.m. competition, which is free to the public, takes place indoors at Miramont Lifestyle Fitness in South Fort Collins.
