TEAM NOTES
Ripken would be proud: FB Zac Pauga and NT Guy Miller completed their CSU careers having played in all 49 CSU games since the beginning of their 2007 redshirt freshman campaigns:
- Pauga finished having played in 180 consecutive quarters. The last time he did not play in a single quarter was at TCU, Sept. 29, 2007. His streak includes the last 32 quarters of his redshirt freshman campaign in '07, all 52 in 2008, 48 in 2009 and 48 in 2010). He missed only a handful of quarters during his freshman year.
- Miller, who finished his career having started 24 straight games, missed just four quarters as a junior in 2009, but like Pauga played in all 52 quarters as a sophomore in 2008 and all 48 as a senior in 2010).
The Boot: Since 1968, when Dan Romero of CSU's ROTC donated the Vietnam-worn combat boot to create the most coveted trophy in either team's history, the rivalry now stands at 22-21, Wyoming.
On the call: Senior associate athletic director Gary Ozzello served as the color commentator today on the CSU Radio Network, pinch-hitting for pinch-hitter Irv Brown, who woke up this morning under the weather. Ozzello, who spent two previous years as a men's basketball color man on the Rams' network, replaced Brown, who was to have replaced Kevin McGlue. McGlue, the Voice of the Colorado Eagles hockey club, couldn't make the game because of an Eagles conflict.
Single-season CSU records established today or prior to today:
- Completion percentage, team: .644 (previous mark, .631, 1997).
- Completion percentage, individual: .647, Pete Thomas (previous mark: .642, Caleb Hanie, 2007).
- Passing yards, freshman: 2,662, Pete Thomas (previous mark: 1,204, Caleb Hanie, 2004).
Single-season Mountain West Conference record established today:
- Passing yards, freshman: 2,662, Pete Thomas (previous mark: 2,653; Ryan Lindley, SDSU, 2008).
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
- QB Pete Thomas (.647), the nation's only true freshman to start each of his team's games at QB, broke Caleb Hanie's 2007 CSU record (.642) for completion percentage in a single season.
- Thomas' completion percentage also ranks as the highest known mark ever by a true freshman at the Division I-A/FBS level. After extensive research, CSU could find only another true freshman with a higher percentage than Peyton Manning's 1994 total at Tennessee, .618. In his class, including redshirt freshmen, he also was the most accurate passer in the country entering the weekend. The .647 mark also ranks 10th among overall players in MWC history.
- Thomas broke the MWC freshman record with 2,662 passing yards, topping Ryan Lindley's 2008 standard, 2,653.
- Thomas on CSU's single-season completions list finished second with 253, moving past No. 2 Scooter Molander (237 in 1987) on the first snap of the game on a connection with Tyson Liggett. Only Terry Nugent (275 in 1983) had more completions in program annals.
- Thomas on CSU's single-season passing attempts list finished fifth with 391. Today, he passed No. 9 Matt Newton (362 in 2000), No. 8 Justin Holland (369 in 2005), No. 7 Newton (370 in 1999), No. 6 Kelly Stouffer (374 in 1986), and No. 5 Billy Farris (379 in 2008). Only No. 4 Terry Nugent (382 in 1982), No. 3 Steve Fairchild (392 in 1980), No. 2 Scooter Molander (407 in 1987) and No., 1 Terry Nugent (433 in 1983) have thrown more in a season.
- Thomas on CSU's single-season passing yards list finished ninth with 2,662, moving past No. 12 Steve Fairchild (2,578, 1980), No. 11 Terry Nugent (2,595 in 1982), No. 10 Matt Newton (2,596 in 1999) and No. 9 Kelly Stouffer (2,604 in 1986).
- Thomas took all but nine snaps and all but two offensive series this year. Klay Kubiak finished the game vs. UNLV Oct. 16 and Nico Ranieri finished the game at Utah Oct. 23. But neither threw a pass. Other than Thomas, only WR Lou Greenwood, who overthrew a wide-open Thomas in the end zone on CSU's first drive at San Diego State (Nov. 6), attempted a pass this season.
- Thomas finished third in MWC history with 2,549 yards of total offense by a freshman. TCU's Andy Dalton (2,692 in 2007) and SDSU's Ryan Lindley (2,591 in 2008) are the only other players with more.
- Thomas since his last drive at Utah Oct. 23, including games against New Mexico, SDSU, BYU and Wyoming, engineered a first down on 37 of his final 47 drives, including 16 straight at one point; two of those drives without a first down were ended by the clock.
- DE C.J. James dropped Austyn Carta-Samuels in the first quarter for his first full sack since the last Wyoming game, Nov. 27, 2009, in Fort Collins. James entered the day with ½ sack this season, registered at Utah (Oct. 23). But his only other two sacks prior to this game were against Wyoming last season. So, he now has 3½ career sacks, but three against the Cowboys. .
- G Jordan Gragert turned 21 years old today.
- LB Mychal Sisson will enter his senior year on a 37-game playing streak. Like Pauga and Miller, he's played in every CSU contest since the beginning of his redshirt freshman season, in his case 2008.
- Sisson padded his national lead in forced fumbles, with his seventh. He finished 2010 with six forced fumbles over his final four games. His seven total forced fumbles were the most by a CSU player since 1998 (Joey Porter 8, Clark Haggans 7).
- Sisson, with two more tackles for loss today, finished with 15, giving him 30 ½ combined over his sophomore and junior seasons, 2009-10. His 15½ tackles for loss in 2009 were the most by a CSU player since future Super Bowl champions Clark Haggans (17) and Joey Porter (16) in 1997.
- P Pete Kontodiakos hit a 69-yard punt in the third quarter, his longest of the season and second-longest of his career. He had a 76-yard punt as a true freshman vs. Nevada, Sept. 19, 2009. Earlier this year, he also eclipsed 60 on a punt vs. TCU (Oct. 2), a 67-yarder. The sophomore now has six punts of at least 60 yards career.
- Kontodiakos finished the year with nine punts inside the 20 over his final five games. His 17 punts inside the 20 this season are the most by a CSU punter since all-conference selection Jimmie Kaylor had 19 in 2007. Kontodiakos also finished with 16 punts of 50-plus yards this season. RB Chris Nwoke (357) finished eighth on CSU's freshman rushing list, suprassing No. 8 Van Ward (327 in1992) today.
